Summary

Our growing DesignOps team is looking for a self-starter with extensive design system experience to expand and own our cross platform multi-brand design system. Focusing on customizability, flexibility, and scalability, you will help increase the design efficiency and efficacy across all products.

The ideal candidate will have excellent organizational and communication skills, be results-driven, and have a superior understanding of digital product and marketing UX/UI with impeccable attention to detail and focus on craft. Collaborating with diverse interdepartmental team members, the Design System Lead will formalize and lead the propagation of our centralized design system across the company. The person in this role will make a generational impact on the future of design at HUB.

Responsibilities

  • Organize, maintain, and improve design system artifacts in Figma, Confluence, and other platforms.
  • Craft dynamic pixel-perfect components with a focus on their functionality and accessibility.
  • Standardize and document design and code decisions. Ensure all decisions work in the context of larger systems, considering edge/stress cases.
  • Establish a distribution process and increase adoption and understanding of the design system.
  • Oversee the usage of all UI elements, including components, assets, UX patterns, and UX copies across website, web application, and mobile application.
  • Own design system documentation, and contribute to training materials, and onboarding.
  • Provide regular design feedback to product team members on implementation and usage.
  • Manage timeline and prioritize deliverables for any design system-related projects.
  • Develop a strong relationship with the developers and create a single source of truth between design and code.
  • Seek and test usability improvements. Collaborate with designers in the optimization of interfaces.
  • Help streamline design workflows via design system (product, content, and marketing).
  • Establish principles, goals, and the measurement of success for the design system.
  • Acts as a mentor to junior and intermediate-level designers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree, relevant experience or certifications in a related area.
  • 5+ years of experience in digital product design or systems design as an individual contributor.
  • Experience building and maintaining complex design systems from scratch.
  • Experience being part of or leading a successful team/project in a hybrid environment
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with successful execution.
  • Communicational skills to build interdepartmental relationships.
  • Love working on finer details but know when to prioritize progress over perfection.
  • Ability to advise and influence stakeholders through reasoning.
  • System-oriented mindset with an interest in solving technical problems.
  • Have an inclusive mindset. A desire to solve problems for people of different needs and perspectives.
  • Self-motivated "go-getter" with a positive attitude who thrives in a fast-paced environment and can effectively manage changing priorities.
  • Learn quickly and efficiently and able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of front-end development (HTML, CSS, JS) and tools like Storybook and GitHub/Bitbucket. Proficient coding ability is a plus.

What you'll accomplish

First 30 Days

  • Build relationships with key stakeholders, including designers, developers, product owners, business, and marketing teams to understand their needs and pain points.
  • Conduct a comprehensive audit of current design systems, including design tokens, documentation, processes, and tooling.
  • Assess the current state of multi-brand support and identify gaps in flexibility, customizability, and scalability.
  • Interview team members and stakeholders to gather feedback and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Summarize key insights and draft an initial onboarding report highlighting opportunities and quick wins.

First 90 Days

  • Develop a strategic roadmap for evolving the design system to better support multi-brand theming and scalability.
  • Begin standardizing processes for design and development handoff, ensuring consistency across brands.
  • Start building or updating foundational components with flexible theming capabilities.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration and open communication between design, development, and business teams.
  • Measure and report on early progress, including adoption rates and user satisfaction with the system.

First 6 Months

  • Launch an updated, scalable design token architecture that enables efficient multi-brand support.
  • Deliver a set of atomic level components that can be easily customized for new brands.
  • Establish a comprehensive documentation portal and resource libraries for all stakeholders.
  • Implement a feedback loop and regular review process to continuously improve the system based on user input.
  • Champion accessibility and inclusion standards across all design system assets.
  • Lead cross-functional workshops to evangelize the design system and drive adoption across teams.

First Year

  • Demonstrate measurable improvements in design and development efficiency, such as reduced time-to-market and fewer inconsistencies.
  • Establish a governance model for ongoing maintenance, contribution, and evolution of the design system.
  • Mentor and develop internal advocates to sustain the system's growth and ensure long-term success.
  • Share success stories and metrics with leadership, highlighting business value and user impact.
