Role Summary:
In this role, you will be responsible for providing structural design and detailing for mass timber structures across Element5 projects. You will lead or participate in project design efforts, to ensure high-quality, innovative, and efficient designs. As our design team grows, you will also contribute to the development of internal resources, tools, and systems to enhance the design of advanced and effective mass timber structures.
Beyond delivering sound engineering solutions, your designs must align with manufacturing and assembly requirements. By collaborating closely with our CLT and Glulam production lines, you will streamline structural design processes to optimize the efficiency of mass timber structures.
Key Responsibilities:
- Structural design of mass timber structures.
- Developing prototypes and building profiles.
- Overseeing and mentoring junior engineers in structural design.
- Creating and refining design tools and resources.
- Balancing customization and standardization in designs, with a focus on product design over traditional construction methods.
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams, including production, to ensure designs align with manufacturing and assembly requirements.
- Addressing client inquiries with confidence and precision, ensuring high-quality service and project alignment.
- Contributing to the development and implementation of sustainable design practices that align with Element5's environmental values.
- All other duties as assigned.
Professional Qualifications & Core Competencies:
- Strong knowledge of CLT and Glulam design, with experience applying Canadian Codes and Standards.
- Ability to align structural designs with production and assembly requirements for efficient delivery.
- Works well with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment between design, production, and client needs.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and adjusting to changing priorities.
- Takes initiative and applies a solutions-focused mindset to technical and process challenges.
Experience & Education:
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in structural design.
- Proficiency in gravity and lateral structural design according to Canadian Codes and Standards.
- Experience in lateral system design, including wind and seismic static and dynamic analysis for multi-story structures.
- Background or strong interest in mass timber design and construction.
- Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering; master's or PhD considered an asset.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation is an asset.
Working Conditions & Environment:
- Primarily office-based with standard business hours.
- Occasional travel required to project sites and manufacturing facilities.
- May involve exposure to typical manufacturing environments, including noise, dust, and variable temperatures.
