The Opportunity

St. John Ambulance BCY is the market leader for first aid training for businesses, consumers, and volunteers. The opportunity is to build on that leadership position, taking it to the next level, ensuring people in communities throughout BC and Yukon are healthy and safe.

Reporting to and partnering with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Director of Training leads and supports the development and delivery of all elements of our training program, including course content, instructor development and engagement, stakeholder relationships (e.g. WorkSafe), program delivery (in-branch and virtual), and customer engagement.

  • You are an experienced training, educational and/or business leader. You know what it takes to help run a department, partnering with other leaders to build strategies and operational plans and to leverage financial resources to ensure success.
  • You know how to lead a team of committed educators and training delivery specialists, and trainers/instructors. From leading a team of direct reports to overseeing a distributed group of instructors, you rely on a supportive leadership style to ensure the team is engaged and performing to a high standard.
  • You understand the education and training space. You know that a great learning experience blends the right content with the right environment and with the right teacher. And you can bring those pieces together as part of a collaborative team.
  • You have deep experience partnering with internal and external team members to ensure everyone is aligned, working effectively together and are clear on the goals to be achieved. You have strong collaboration and influencing skills, and you are comfortable working as supervisor, or in a hands-on capacity as needed. Leading by example and 'rolling up your sleeves' is what you do.
  • You understand learning outcomes and how to ensure they are achieved. You are flexible as requirements change, with the agility to adapt to changing situations and client requirements; you understand how to meet needs - for students, workplaces and communities.

Responsibilities and Duties

Executive Leadership:

  • Be an active member of the senior executive team; partner with the CEO, Director of Marketing & Community Services, Director of Business Development, VP, Finance & Administration, Director of Finance and Director, and HR to lead the company.
  • Make SJA BCY better every day; regularly contribute beyond your core Training portfolio. Lead key company initiatives as an executive leader, including key cross functional working groups.
  • Actively participate in organizational strategic planning to identify opportunities for growth, improved performance and team engagement.
  • Interact with the senior executive team to add value through business unit planning, progress reporting, and issues management.
  • Provide market-based expertise to support strategic planning, revenue growth, and mission-aligned activities.
  • Drive and reinforce company culture; inspire SJA BCY staff on your team and throughout the organization.
  • Represent your portfolio to the Board of Directors as needed

Training:

  • Represent SJA BCY in discussion with our National office and National Training team; participate in National training initiatives.
  • Partner with Marketing and Business Development to develop relationships with training clients and increase the number of students trained.
  • Partner with HR and Operations to successfully recruit, train, and deploy new first aid instructors.
  • Partner with Operations to ensure we have a strong pipeline of qualified instructors to cover our training needs for all locations.
  • Ensure SJA BCY's instructors are engaged, well trained, and positioned to reinforce and grow our market leadership position.
  • Position SJA BCY for the future; lead efforts to open and expand new areas for SJA BCY to provide training, e.g. community first aid, schools first aid, etc.
  • Ensure SJA BCY's course materials, instructor qualifications, and training methodologies meet or exceed Provincial and/or National standards.
  • Lead SJA BCY's engagement with WorkSafe; ensure SJA BCY remains a leading provider with the full support of WorkSafe; ensure SJA BCY is fully compliant with all regulatory and contractual obligations.
  • Advise the CEO and senior executive team of any changes/updates in compliance that might impact training business to ensure proactive planning/strategizing and risk management.
  • Serve as SJA BCY's internal and external subject matter expert on first aid training; ensure SJA BCY remains current on education and training trends.

Administration/Operations:

  • Oversee the Training expenses in line with the overall SJA BCY budgets.
  • Engage with SJA BCY branches to optimize the training calendar annually.
  • Work with branches to ensure SJA BCY is positioned to achieve its goal of having the 'right instructor/right place - every time'.
  • Drive innovative initiatives to improve operational efficiency with branches, engagement with instructors, and collaboration with other departments (e.g. Finance).
  • Apply a continuous improvement approach to ensure policies and procedures support effective operations of the Training department.

Team Leadership:

  • Lead a small training team; position the team to deliver excellence today while also preparing for future opportunities and requirements.
  • Oversee a distributed team of first aid instructors across BC and Yukon; drive engagement between SJA BCY and instructors; ensure they feel valued and part of the team; support their growth and development.
  • Inspire a strong team ethic; ensure commitment to SJA BCY and its mission.
  • Build the SJA BCY culture; ensure a strong 'internal partnership' mindset.
  • Set goals, KPI's, and performance metrics to align with the overall goals of SJA BCY; hold the team accountable for performance and work with them on any areas for improvement.
  • Be a strong coach, leader, and mentor to ensure team members are growing their experience, skills, and ability to contribute to SJA BCY, while also feeling confident about their career development.

Qualifications

  • To deliver on the expectations outlined above, we expect you to have deep experience in education, training and/or skills development.
  • You understand the current training and education environment, and how to build a robust training and education experience for students and instructors.
  • You have strong strategic skills, with the ability to apply your skills for both short and long term priorities and challenges.
  • You understand that training and education programs exist within a market context, and know how to deliver programs that meet market needs.
  • You have worked in environments where a diverse and varied agenda is the norm; where internal and external clients and stakeholders matter equally; you can navigate between private and public sector partners.
  • You have exposure to charitable, not for profit, and mission-led organizations.
  • You've led teams (whether small or large) and helped them be successful.
  • You've been exposed to executive leadership and are comfortable working in, and above, your defined portfolio; you have a background of helping your organization grow and achieve success.
  • You have been asked to make big things happen (but not necessarily for big organizations); you know the value of putting in some 'hustle' with your team to make the work special.

  • We offer a strong compensation package and are committed to creating a growth environment for everyone on our team. The annual salary range for this position is $108,000.00 - $118,000.00, with an incentive available for strong performance against agreed KPI's.
