Reports to: Western Canada Regional HSE Manager

Role Summary:

Reporting to the Divisional HSE Manager, the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Manager is responsible for providing leadership to the HSE Advisors and support for their HSE management system. This includes providing advice and consultation; coaching and facilitation; incident investigation and injury management, and any necessary reporting and record-keeping. This is primarily a field-based position with the potential of travel.

Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Manager Primary Duties & Responsibilities Specific duties and responsibilities include:

  • Provide advice and consultation for programs in support of our corporate strategy for strong safety performance and continuous improvement
  • Investigate processes; support management with the collection and tracking of all safety related metrics
  • Timely provision of advice and documentation to facilitate investigations
  • Management of injury claims and regulatory reporting associated with those claims
  • Assistance with providing safety-related training
  • Coordinate and prepare HSE documentation that is commonly used by the business units
  • Design and create a site or project specific safety plans if required by management
  • Assist with creation of strategic initiatives to help with client interface
  • Analyze safety conditions (primarily field-based) and recommend changes to continuously improve operational safety performance
  • Assist with the maintenance of records as necessary to comply with relevant laws and regulations
  • Prepare and submit reports to document both compliance and non-compliance issues
  • Assist supervisors with their audits and inspections of operational activities
  • Review existing safety systems and make recommendation for improvement as required
  • Proactively identify plans to reduce hazards to reduce the risk to the organization
  • Provide advice on safety systems, trends, response actions, investigation, and interpretation of health and safety regulations
  • Assist with various programs and initiatives to build and sustain a safety culture that becomes a "way of life" for employees and contractors
  • Take an active role in ensuring that all employees understand and comply with company policies and procedures
  • Assist with graduated training program as needed
  • Ensure COR and ISO audits are completed in timely manner
  • Other duties as required

To be considered for this role, the "Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Manager" must have the following qualifications:

  • Degree/Diploma/Certificate in Health and Safety, or equivalent training and experience
  • 8+ years of Health & Safety experience
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform responsibilities of the position
  • Railroad and/or construction experience
  • NCSO, CRSP, or other related designations are considered preferred
  • Knowledge of federal and provincial l health, safety regulations, and related strategies
  • Knowledge of provincial safety and worker's compensation legislation
  • Knowledge and experience with COR and management system auditing
  • Field safety auditing and investigation experience
  • 3-5 years of Site-based safety Management experience
  • Independent, self-motivated, team player and leader
  • Demonstrate the ability to think critically, act logically to evaluate situations, solve problems, and make decisions
  • Sense of urgency and delivery
  • Attention to detail
  • Coaching and training skills
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills
