Rewrite Capital Advisors is an M&A advisory firm dedicated to converting businesses to employee ownership. We proposed, lobbied for, and won Canada's new Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) legislation in 2024. As the most knowledgeable business service providers in the Canadian employee ownership space, we're helping mid-sized companies across the country to implement the legislation and transition their businesses to employee-owned.
Currently, we are seeking a passionate full-time Business Development Manager to join our team. This role focuses on identifying business owners interested in selling to their employees and supporting prospective clients who are considering an EOT. The ideal candidate will have an excellent understanding of Canada's EOT legislation, strong relationship-building skills, and a commitment to preserving local businesses while creating wealth-building opportunities for Canadian workers
Key Responsibilities
Business Owner Outreach & Education
- Identify and engage business owners who may be candidates for employee ownership transitions
- Educate owners on Canada's EOT legislation and the benefits of employee ownership
- Develop and maintain relationships with business owners, particularly those nearing retirement or planning their succession
- Conduct initial assessments to determine EOT feasibility
Pipeline Development & Management
- Build and maintain a robust pipeline of potential EOT candidates
- Qualify prospects based on financial performance, ownership readiness, and cultural fit
- Track engagement and conversion metrics using CRM systems
- Develop targeted outreach strategies for specific industries and geographic markets
Market Development & Networking
- Build relationships with referral sources including banks, attorneys, accountants, financial advisors, succession planners, and business brokers
- Represent the company at industry conferences, business owner events, and professional association meetings
- Develop partnerships with organizations promoting employee ownership (EOC, TEA, NCEO, Oxford Symposium, etc.)
- Stay current on employee ownership trends, legislation, and best practices in Canada and around the world
Deal Support
- Collaborate with transaction teams to move qualified prospects through the conversion process
- Support preliminary feasibility studies and financial analysis
- Coordinate with attorneys, valuation firms, and other professional service providers
- Cultivate and maintain client relationships pre-onboarding, during pauses, and post-transaction
Thought Leadership & Content Development
- Contribute to educational content including case studies, white papers, and presentation materials
- Conduct and support webinars, workshops, and educational events for business owners and other stakeholders
- Participate in industry publications and speaking opportunities
- Help develop marketing materials specific to employee ownership benefits
- Develop and iteratively improve the company's process and services to achieve higher levels of excellence
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree (minimum) in Business, Finance, Economics, or related field
- 7-10 years experience in business development, M&A, relationship management, or professional services
- Strong understanding of employee ownership structures
- Experience working with business owners and understanding succession planning challenges
- Proven track record of building and maintaining client relationships, problem-solving for the client, and generating new business
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, clear and empathetic, strong attention to detail
- Self-motivated with ability to work independently and manage territory/pipeline
- White-glove service oriented, loves to help others and takes pride in doing it well, takes ownership for their work and results
Preferred Qualifications
- 4+ years experience serving mid-market owners or C-suite executives
- Previous experience with similar transactions and governance structures
- Background in investor relations, investment banking, business brokerage, corporate finance, or management consulting preferred
- Experience with Hubspot or similar CRM platforms
- Network of professional relationships in target markets
- Bilingual or advanced fluency in French is an asset, but not required
Industry Knowledge Requirements
- Understanding of EOT feasibility criteria and transaction process
- Knowledge of tax benefits and financing options for employee ownership structures
- Awareness of regulatory requirements and compliance considerations
- Understanding of employee ownership impact on business culture and operations
