The Canadian Centre for Professional Legal Education (CPLED) is a non-profit organization that offers the Bar admission program in Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia. CPLED is dedicated to helping students hone their practical skills and assess how well they can apply their legal knowledge and skills in practical situations. CPLED maintains a high standard of programs and services for students to ensure a strong transition into the legal profession.
The Learning and Evaluation Specialist is a key member of the Content team and is responsible for the development and review of learning and evaluation materials and resources for PREP candidates, Legal Research and Writing (LRW) students, and students of any courses that may be developed in the future. They are also responsible for the development and review of materials and resources that will be used by CPLED contractors, including Assessors, Evaluators, Facilitators, and Practice Managers.
Success in this position requires creative thinking, planning, collaboration, problem-solving skills, and strong research, analysis and evaluation skills, as well as well-developed communication and conflict management skills.
Position and Location
This position is full-time. The organization's head office is in Calgary, Alberta. Working remotely may be acceptable for those residing outside of Calgary or vicinity. Those residing within Calgary or vicinity are required to work a hybrid work week with allocated in-office days.
This position has a comprehensive benefits package and an annual salary range of $111,000 to $139,000.
Duties
- Design and develop materials, resources, and assignments for the Practice Readiness education program ("PREP"), LRW course, and future courses or programs;
- Ensure program content maintains relevance through ongoing research and monitoring of changes/developments in the law and make revisions of PREP and other course content as required;
- Design and develop new course material such as virtual firm simulations, and foundation modules and workshops content, ensuring that it aligns with CPLED's Competency Framework and meets learning objectives;
- Revise, design, and develop training materials for Assessors, Evaluators, Facilitators, and Practice Managers;
- Facilitate and provide instruction on the delivery of PREP and other courses in an online environment, to Assessors, Evaluators, Facilitators, and Practice Managers;
- Assist in review of candidate/student submissions and associated assessments or evaluations;
- Assist in the development and delivery of remedial courses, programs or other supports for PREP candidates during the phases of PREP and/or after unsuccessful Capstone sitting(s);
- Assist in delivering collaborative, practical, and relevant training, creating the optimum adult learning environment based on adult learning theory.
- Maintain assessment/evaluation design and development standards to ensure assessment/evaluation integrity.
- Identify and mitigate risks that may impact the quality or on-time delivery of assessments/evaluations.
- Collaborate with the Content Manager to define and execute assessment/evaluation policies, processes, and best practices.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary education and law degree required with 5+ years of progressively responsible post-call experience.
- Membership with a Canadian law society (practising or non-practising status) and standing acceptable to CPLED.
- Practice experience in the areas of family law, criminal law, and/or business law.
- Experience managing a legal practice is preferred.
- Certificate in Adult Education or equivalent work experience (or agreement to take certificate or other programs)
- Project management experience is an asset.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of stakeholders.
- Technically strong computer skills, such as Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, SharePoint).
- Prior experience with D2L and creating assessments/evaluations is considered an asset.
- Collaboration skills, with an ability to work with all individuals and groups.
- Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines under pressure.
- Working remotely is acceptable, however the head office is in Calgary, and travel may be required periodically if the successful candidate resides out of the city.
