Eastgate Academy is a private school in Moncton that opened in September 2021. The school's focus is on the healthy balance between intellectual and academic growth and physical and mental well-being. Eastgate Academy is an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) school and will develop to offer a full International Baccalaureate continuum. The school currently has students in kindergarten to grade 9, and will expand to offer kindergarten to grade 10 in the school year.

Eastgate Academy seeks a Director of Teaching and Learning to serve as the school's senior academic administrator and leader. Collegial, collaborative and student-focused, the successful applicant will be an accredited teacher with a track record of success as a teacher and administrator. Experience and leadership within the International Baccalaureate is important, as is the capacity to research, develop, and implement integrated academic pathways for our growing school. This hands-on role is ideal for a leader who is passionate about inquiry-based learning and excited to contribute to the academic growth of a small and growing IB school.
Role/Responsibilities
The role of the Director of Teaching and Learning is to support a school culture that is rooted in collaboration, community, engagement, and wellness. The Director will play an integral role in maintaining Eastgate's student-centred approach. The Director is accountable for the leadership and management of the approaches to learning and teaching through the development of curricular and co-curricular life at Eastgate Academy.
Instructional Leadership
- Fosters quality teaching and learning opportunities to support student growth and achievement
- Empowers and guides academic staff to excel and reach their full potential and to realize Eastgate Academy's mission
- Embraces a continuum-view of the International Baccalaureate as it articulates with the BC curriculum
- Ensures the academic programme is implemented effectively by collaborating with other members of the pedagogical leadership team. Inspire teachers to develop a passion for the IB.
- Monitor classroom management practices and instructional quality through regular observations and feedback.
- Lead and model best practices in classroom instruction by maintaining a part-time teaching load.
- Prepares and presents regular academic performance and planning updates to senior leadership, including curriculum milestones, professional development effectiveness, and student outcomes.

- Assists in developing and realizing the school's mission, vision, and values.

- Provides leadership for academic staff by modelling personal and professional growth in line with the attributes of the IB Learner Profile
- Build strong, trusting relationships with students, staff, and families to support a sense of belonging and well-being.
- Communicate regularly and effectively with parents and caregivers about student learning and school programs.
School Planning and Organization
- Coordinates teaching and co-curricular activities of the school through timetabling and assigning classes and activities to ensure a balanced, equitable academic and co-curricular program.
- Develops and refines student behaviour expectations and support practices in alignment with the school's philosophy on well-being and discipline.
- Collaborates with members of the pedagogical leadership team to create an action plan and long-term goals that support academic growth and development
- Promotes the academic policies and leads curriculum planning; articulates and models the school goals, objectives, and methods of assessment
- Supports educators in developing caring classroom environments that reflect the school's Learning Environment Policy
- Contribute to the hiring, assignment, and retention of academic staff; make recommendations to the Head of School as needed.
- Works with senior leadership to translate academic development goals into actionable strategic plans that include timelines, staffing, professional development, and financial implications.
Supervision of Staff/Personnel
- Observes, supervises, and helps assess the faculty in the development and implementation of approaches to teaching and learning; reviews and evaluates the academic and co-curricular programs
- Takes a supportive approach to deal diplomatically with workplace issues to maintain a school climate that is positive and productive
- Promotes and fosters professional and personal growth of teacher and other academic staff through professional development structures and evaluations; conducts orientation sessions, workshops and other staff development and training activities pertaining to teaching and learning
- Provides input on and monitors use of the academic programming budget to support effective learning.
School Operations
- Supports teachers in identifying and requesting instructional supplies and resources; reviews requests to ensure alignment with curriculum goals.
- Ensures effective use of the learning management system (LMS) to support teaching, learning, and communication.
- Collaborates with the admin team and the coordinators to develop academic timetables that align with staffing and program needs.
- Supports the development and oversight of effective attendance practices that promote student engagement, well-being, and accountability.
- Supports the admission and enrollment process by coordinating classroom integration activities such as "Student for a Day" and homeroom placement. Ensures new students experience a smooth and welcoming transition into the school community.
- Collaborates with senior leadership to align academic needs (e.g., supplies, staffing, PD) with available resources and operational planning. Provides input to ensure cost-effective, quality-driven educational programming.
Requirements and Experience
Education and Certification
- Bachelor's degree in Education (required)
- Master's degree in administration, leadership, curriculum or other related area (strongly preferred)
- Hold or be eligible for a Canadian provincial Teachers' Certificate
- Formal IB training or significant experience with IB programmes (PYP, MYP, or DP)
Professional Experience
- A minimum of 10 year's teaching experience including five years of leadership experience preferred
- Demonstrated experience in curriculum development, school planning, and staff mentorship
- Private/independent school teaching and/or leadership experience
- Experience working in a small or growing school community is considered an asset
- Experience with CAIS membership application process
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong understanding of inquiry-based pedagogy and student-centred learning
- Familiarity with effective assessment and reporting practices
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trusting relationships with students, staff, and families
- Proficiency with learning management systems (LMS) and educational technology tools
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple responsibilities
- Knowledge of the BC curriculum and its alignment with the IB continuum is considered an asset
- Fluency in English and facility in French
