Senior Data Catalog Implementation Consultant (Contract Position)

Roles and responsibilities:
Looking for a seasoned Data Catalog Implementation Consultant with deep experience in Alation to support the successful deployment and adoption of a new enterprise data catalog within our Data Governance Office. The roadmap is already defined - now we need a strategic operator who can execute, automate, and drive adoption at scale.
This role will focus on delivering a seamless and automated catalog experience for technical and business users, ensuring metadata is not only ingested but trusted, governed, and actively used across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the end-to-end implementation of Alation, including configuration, metadata ingestion, and integration with cloud and on-prem data sources
Align catalog implementation with the organization's data governance roadmap, focusing on scalability and automation
Work with business and technical teams to define and enforce metadata standards, business glossaries, and data stewardship workflows
Automate ingestion of technical metadata, data lineage, usage metrics, and documentation where possible
Set up user roles, permissions, and policies in accordance with governance and security requirements
Support the design and operationalization of data stewardship models, tagging strategies, and approval workflows
Collaborate with the Infra, Data Engineering, and Architecture teams to integrate Alation into the existing tech stack (cloud warehouses, BI tools, etc.)
Develop and lead training, enablement, and change management sessions to drive user adoption
Provide guidance on integrating Alation with collaboration tools like Atlassian (Jira/Confluence) for seamless workflow tracking
Measure success of catalog deployment with KPIs such as usage, coverage, and feedback loops - and iterate based on business needs
Must have skills/experience/qualifications
7+ years of experience in data governance, metadata management, or data architecture
Hands-on experience implementing and configuring Alation in an enterprise environment
Strong understanding of data governance frameworks, including roles, policies, lineage, and stewardship
Experience in P&C insurance or financial services data environments (policy, claims, underwriting, actuarial data)
Proven ability to work cross-functionally with business, IT, and compliance teams to drive data governance initiatives
Familiarity with data catalog automation, REST APIs, and integrations with modern cloud platforms (Snowflake, Azure, AWS, GCP)
Excellent stakeholder engagement, facilitation, and documentation skills
Nice to Have
Experience integrating Alation with Atlassian suite (Jira/Confluence) for workflow management
Understanding of data privacy and compliance standards (e.g., PIPEDA, GDPR, CCPA)
Consulting background or prior experience in enterprise data transformation initiatives
Familiarity with BI/analytics tooling (Power BI, Tableau, Qlik, etc.) and how they interact with cataloged assets
