Role Responsibilities:
Operational Excellence:
- Focus on continuous improvement
- Leverage Lean manufacturing principles and tools to eliminate waste, optimize processes, reduce costs, and drive innovation
- Oversee and supervise all production operations (including farm and related processes), ensuring safety, coordination of materials, labor, and equipment to meet production goals, maintain flow, monitor and analyze processes and efficiency, and liaise with other departments as needed
- Define performance indicators
- Coordinate with the Quality department to ensure all cultivated products undergo quality control testing
Leadership and People Management:
- Promote ongoing performance improvement and accountability
- Mentor, motivate, attract, retain, and develop a small, high-performing team
- Implement recruitment solutions that meet financial targets and planned company growth
- Maintain active communication (upward and downward), being visible, approachable, and accessible
- Foster ongoing collaboration and minimize interdepartmental silos where needed
Risk Mitigation:
- Identify and mitigate risks to ensure business continuity
Safety First:
- Ensure production staff have the tools, equipment, and training required, and verify that food production is conducted safely and securely in line with regulatory and SQF requirements, free from contamination
- Consistently follow and enforce sanitation standard operating procedures (SSOPs), occupational health and safety regulations, and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs)
- Create a culture focused on health and safety
- Lead efforts to ensure the highest standards of food and employee safety
- Develop a health and safety model to serve as a prototype for future farms
- Work with the Quality Assurance team to ensure safe product delivery
- Maintain cleaning and maintenance programs, ensuring timely execution of sanitation practices
- Ensure all personnel are trained in food safety and hygiene and comply with SOPs throughout production
- Communicate any procedural changes that could affect food safety to the QA department and collaborate on planning
- Act as a leader by promoting a healthy, safe, and inclusive environment
Profitability - Long-Term Financial Performance:
- Responsible for the overall operating result and operational success of the farm
- Build and execute high-performing operations in alignment with sales goals
- Plan, organize, and control production to ensure efficiency, timeliness, budget compliance, and quality standards
- Determine labor needs according to the operating budget and evaluate workforce planning to optimize efficiency
- Work closely with the Horticulture Manager to set performance indicators
- Collaborate with other department heads on decisions related to agricultural inputs and capital expenditures
- Manage resource allocation for project activities
Production and Logistics:
- Assign and develop team members, ensuring they have the tools and support needed to succeed
- Communicate regularly with employees and functional leaders to ensure the operations team is informed and aligned with business priorities
- Continuously study and implement improvement measures to streamline processes, resources, and materials
- Measure and manage performance effectively to meet and exceed goals
- Produce and present relevant performance reports and KPIs to support decision-making (e.g., downtime, resource usage, yield improvement, quality, workflow optimization)
- Participate in vendor negotiations to ensure product relevance and cost-effectiveness
- Ensure efficient logistics and supply chain processes and quality customer experience
- Stay informed on industry best practices and trends
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
- University degree in Business Administration, Logistics, Engineering, or a related field
- 8-10 years of experience leading high-growth production operations in food processing and/or manufacturing environments
- Knowledge and experience with production processes and techniques, quality systems, safety standards, compliance, and maintenance
- Leadership experience in developing new facilities is a significant asset
- Proven leadership and people management experience, with strong talent development skills
- Strong expertise in performance indicator analysis and development
- Experience in launching or creating new facilities is highly desirable
