Join SAAM Towage Canadá as the Employee Relations Specialist and make a difference where innovation meets responsibility.

Under the direction of the HR Manager and guidance of the Director of Operations, the Employee Relations Specialist supports the administration and interpretation of collective agreements and company policies for both unionized and non-unionized employees. They ensure fair and consistent application of policies while maintaining compliance with employment standards and labour laws to promote healthy employer/employee relations.

Functions

  • Manages employee grievances and disciplinary actions, ensuring timely resolution in line with company policies.
  • Advises managers and staff on policy interpretation, performance, and attendance management.
  • Monitors labor law changes and recommends policy updates to ensure compliance.
  • Supports collective bargaining through research and proposal development.
  • Delivers training to enhance understanding of labor policies and practices.
  • Maintains strong union relationships to promote collaboration and prevent disputes.
  • Supports HR operations by promoting employee well-being across the employee lifecycle.
  • Adapts to change and takes on additional responsibilities as needed to support company goals.

Requirements

  • Degree in Business, Human Resources, Labour Relations, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Solid understanding of both unionized and non-unionized employment relations, including grievance handling, contract administration, workplace investigations, and employment legislation within Canada.
  • Familiarity with collective bargaining processes, progressive discipline, performance management, and HR policies affecting salaried employees.
  • Knowledge of the Canada Shipping Act and Associated Regulations is preferred.
  • 2-4 years of experience in Labour and employee relations within a unionized environment.
  • Practical experience in exposure to employee investigations, workplace conflict resolution, and policy interpretation for both hourly and salaried employees.
  • Experience supporting grievance resolution, contract interpretation, and collective bargaining research.
  • Experience working in a multi-jurisdictional organization is an asset.
  • Must be legally allowed to work in Canada.
