Your New Role
As an Application Architect - Cloud Applications, you will play a pivotal role in architecting and delivering advanced cloud-based solutions for a major public sector project in Ottawa. This is an onsite contract role, running from mid-May (pending compliance) through April 30, 2030. You will lead cross-functional teams, mentor junior developers, and collaborate closely with both client and vendor teams to ensure the successful design, integration, and security of complex applications within a fast-paced, regulated environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the design and development of custom cloud application solutions, ensuring alignment with client requirements and industry best practices.
- Mentor and guide junior developers in architectural principles, secure coding, and design patterns.
- Collaborate with client and vendor teams to drive project objectives and resolve technical challenges.
- Implement and enforce security best practices (e.g., ISO 26262, IEC 62443, NIST 800-53, ITSG-33) for data in transit and at rest.
- Prioritize tasks and initiatives effectively, demonstrating initiative and creative problem-solving.
- Ensure solutions adhere to export regulations and security clearance requirements.
What You'll Need to Succeed
- Canadian Federal Government Security Clearance - Secret (mandatory).
- Canadian citizenship or permanent residency; dual/third nationality must be from an approved country
- 8+ years of experience in application architecture, design, and development, with a strong focus on event-driven architecture.
- Proven experience in the Defence industry or federal projects.
- Expertise in low-level programming and embedded systems (C/C++, Python), including bitwise operations, memory management, microcontroller programming, device drivers, and firmware development.
- In-depth knowledge of networking and communication protocols (e.g., UART, RS-232, RS-485, Modbus, MIL-STD-1553B) and custom binary messaging formats.
- Experience with real-time and operating systems (e.g., embedded Linux), multi-threaded applications, and troubleshooting concurrency issues.
- Strong understanding of system architecture for custom applications, modularity, maintainability, data serialization, and embedded system security.
- Experience in bridging legacy and modern technologies, middleware development (API gateways, event brokers, service mesh).
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work effectively within tight client timelines.
