Essential Functions/ Responsibilities
The Database Administrator will help design stable and reliable databases, to ensure our database systems run effectively and securely on a daily basis. An individual in this role will be responsible for developing, testing, improving, and maintaining new and existing databases to help users retrieve data effectively. The DBA will work closely with developers to ensure system consistency, in addition to collaborating with administrators and clients to provide technical support and identify new requirements.
- Manage and maintain AWS RDS MySQL, DocumentDB, and DynamoDB instances, ensuring high availability, reliability, and security.
- Monitor database performance and query execution using CloudWatch, Performance Insights, and other AWS-native tools.
- Analyze slow queries and implement optimizations to improve application/database performance.
- Set up and maintain database maintenance tasks including backups, patching, indexing, and data purging & archiving strategies.
- Collaborate with application developers and leadership to recommend schema changes and data modeling improvements.
- Design and implement monitoring alerts for performance bottlenecks, storage thresholds, and availability issues.
- Improve and support existing ETL pipelines, ensuring efficient and reliable data movement across systems.
- Support and enhance Snowflake integrations, ensuring data consistency, performance, and timely updates.
- Implement security best practices across database environments, including encryption, access controls, and auditing.
- Troubleshoot and resolve database-related issues promptly to minimize downtime and data loss.
- Create and maintain documentation for database architecture, processes, and maintenance routines.
- Continuously evaluate and introduce tools and practices for better database performance, reliability, and scalability.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent practical experience).
- 7+ years of hands-on experience as a Database Administrator in cloud environments, preferably AWS.
- Proven experience managing AWS RDS MySQL databases in production environments.
- Experience working with AWS DocumentDB and DynamoDB, including performance tuning and scaling strategies.
- Strong experience monitoring and troubleshooting database performance using AWS CloudWatch and related tools.
- Solid understanding of SQL query tuning and optimization techniques.
- Experience maintaining ETL pipelines and data workflows across different systems.
- Familiarity with Snowflake data warehouse integration and support.
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code and automation tools (e.g., CloudFormation, Terraform, or AWS CDK) is a plus.
- Working knowledge of database security best practices, including IAM, encryption, and auditing.
- Experience in cross-functional collaboration with engineering and product teams to support data-related initiatives.
- AWS certification(s) such as AWS Certified Database - Specialty or AWS Solutions Architect is a plus.
Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as laptop computers, photocopiers and smartphones.
Physical Demands
This role requires sitting or standing at a computer workstation.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 40 hours a week. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
