Start Alberta is looking for a Data & Insights Strategist (remote, contract, P/T) to support our mission of strengthening Alberta's innovation ecosystem. Start Alberta's mandate is to 'Provide preeminent, verified, and transparent data on startups, venture capital, and deal flow that equips investors, tech founders, and policymakers, with the information needed to make their next, big move.'

The Data & Insights Strategist is responsible for improving the quality and accuracy of our data and elevating the experience of our users. You will work directly with Start Alberta's key stakeholders including investors, economic development agencies, startup founders, community partners, and our Europe-based data platform team.

Reporting directly to the Executive Director, A100, with oversight from Alberta Enterprise Corporation (AEC), you will:

  • Respond to Data Requests: Efficiently handle incoming requests for reports, insights, and analytics from government, community leaders, academic institutions, and other key stakeholders.
  • Liaise with Platform Provider: Establish regular communication with Europe-based team on dashboard updates and issues; maintain monthly data review and issues log, and seeing action items through to resolution.
  • Ensure Data Accuracy & Relevance: Ensure data quality through curation, desk research, classification, content review, and moderation.
  • Proactively Identify Insights: Spot gaps in existing reporting and uncover new data opportunities that add value to Alberta's innovation ecosystem.
  • Engage with Stakeholders: Work with executives, policymakers, and ecosystem partners to understand their data needs and deliver insights that drive strategic decision-making.
  • Enhance Reporting Frameworks: Contribute to the evolution of Start Alberta's data strategy by identifying improvements in how we collect, analyze, and share ecosystem insights.
  • Provide Platform Support: Assist users with troubleshooting, navigation, demos, and general support on the Start Alberta platform, ensuring a seamless and positive experience.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Strong proficiency in data, data management and visualization tools with minimum 5+ years of relevant work experience.
  • Exceptional and strategic communication skills, with the ability to translate complex data into meaningful insights for diverse audiences.
  • Experience working with executives and senior stakeholders, particularly in government, community, or research sectors.
  • A proactive and strategic mindset, able to identify opportunities for ecosystem improvement through data.
  • A customer-focused, high-touch approach, ensuring that insights provided align with stakeholder needs and add tangible value.

This is a part-time (20hrs/week) remote contract role based in Alberta with flexible hours Mon-Fri and occasional in-person meetings and events in Calgary or Edmonton.
