Position Overview
Reporting to the Vice-President Strategic Initiatives, Partnerships and Engagement, the role of the Business Development Manager is to take a leadership role in prospecting and securing new members for the Calgary Chamber at all levels - a position essential to the Chamber's organizational growth and expansion.
The Business Development Manager excels in a fast-paced, growth-oriented and collaborative environment. The successful candidate has a proven background in sales, leads with integrity, is results-oriented, can easily network and build relationships, and understands how to execute the full sales cycle.
Key Responsibilities
Membership Sales
- Drive major growth within the Chamber membership network across all industries and quadrants of Calgary
- Lead industry and company-specific research to generate and grow a robust prospect list that you will manage and use to set targets
- Set and achieve monthly sales objectives
- Create winning proposals and compelling presentations to negotiate and close business deals
- Generate leads through cold calling, emailing, market research, attending events, holding a noticeable role in the business community and cultivating your network
- Meet with new prospects and learn about their business to diagnose challenges, strategic needs and pain points to develop a true-value membership proposal to positively impact their business
- Identify decision makers, schedule meetings, meet prospects, execute appropriate sales techniques to secure members
- Act as liaison and connector between prospective members, current members and the Chamber Executive Leadership Team
Enhance Chamber Awareness
- Increase awareness of, and interest in, the Calgary Chamber
- Develop meaningful relationships within the business community to advance Chamber objectives
- Present the Chamber's value proposition to potential members and the broader business community
- Collaborate with other units at the Chamber on targeted membership strategies
- Must be willing to support and attend Calgary Chamber events, and other events throughout the city, to meet prospective members and engage with existing members
Membership Support and Retention
- Provide a clean line of communication and hand-off once new members are secured and handed off to the Membership Engagement team
- Support the Membership Engagement team on data management, and ensure the prospective member database is updated in real time
- Support meaningful and regular reporting to the Vice-President Strategic Initiatives, Partnerships and Engagement, and Executive Leadership Team
- Have an aptitude for developing and maintaining knowledge of a member's company, products and services
Leadership
- Lead and mentor one direct report
- Lead and provide guidance to all Chamber staff on sales strategy, tactics and best practices
Qualifications and Requirements
- 7-10 years experience in sales, preferably industry or membership sales
- Candidate must have demonstrated ability to increase organizational revenue
- Candidate must be relationship oriented with exceptional oral and written communication skills
- Must be a self-starter that can easily turn direction into action and execute deliverables
- Experience cultivating a robust CRM system
- Experience with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, Dynamics)
- Ability to work with, and influence, all levels of an organization
- Ability to manage negotiations and possess a strong business acumen
- Excellent organizational skills
- Must be flexible, punctual and adaptable to change
- Highly self-motivated and directed
