AS400 RPG PROGRAMMER
A great opportunity for an experienced AS400 RPG programmer who wants to play a critical role in maintaining, optimizing, and eventually transitioning our client's retail technology stack.
Location: Toronto, ON (401 and Dufferin)
Non Hybrid, On-Site
Salary: $80,000 plus commensurate with experience.
We are seeking a highly skilled AS400 RPG Programmer to support, maintain, and enhance our client's retail business systems. Our client operates on an IBM AS400 server running on Island Pacific software (i5 System, OS V6R1M0 L00). An experienced RPG programmer is required to customize, optimize, and develop within this legacy system.
While the core requirement for this role is RPG programming on AS400, experience with API development and Windows-based programming would be a strong asset. Over time, this role may also involve contributing to modernization efforts, including migrating away from AS400 and/or transitioning from CSV-based FTP file transfers to API integrations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
AS400 RPG Programming & System Customization (Primary Focus)
• Develop, modify, and maintain programs within our Island Pacific software running on an IBM AS400 system. (i5 System, OS V6R1M0 L00)
• Write, test, and implement RPG IV, RPG III, and CL (Control Language) programs to enhance system functionality.
• Debug, troubleshoot, and optimize existing RPG programs.
• Create and maintain automation scripts for AS400 processes.
• Collaborate with management to implement custom features and functionality as business needs evolve.
SQL Data Extraction & Reporting
• Work with DB2 for i (IBM iSeries Database) to extract and manipulate data.
• Develop and optimize queries for sales, inventory, and operational reporting.
• Assist in creating custom reports in PDF, Excel, CSV, or other formats.
API Integration & Windows Programming (Highly Valued, But Not Required)
• Support efforts to replace CSV-based FTP data transfers with API integrations for real-time data flow.
• Work with external vendors and internal teams to integrate AS400 data with modern business applications
• Assist in developing Windows-based utilities or applications to facilitate data extraction and reporting.
System Modernization & Future Migration
• Provide technical expertise in planning a future migration from AS400 to a modern ERP or business management system.
• Help ensure smooth data transition and integration between legacy and future systems.
• Identify opportunities to improve system efficiency and automation.
REQUIREMENTS:
• 10+ years of experience in RPG programming (RPG IV, RPG III, CL) on IBM AS400 / iSeries.
• Strong understanding of legacy retail ERP systems, particularly Island Pacific software.
• Experience working with DB2 for i (IBM iSeries Database) and SQL query development.
• Excellent debugging, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple development tasks.
Bonus Skills (Not Required, But Good to Have):
• API development experience (REST, SOAP, JSON, XML).
• Familiarity with Windows programming and automation tools for data extraction and reporting.
• Experience integrating AS400 data with third-party applications or cloud-based solutions.
• Knowledge of modernization strategies for legacy systems, including migration to newer ERP solutions.
COMPENSATION:
Annual Salary: Very competitive and commensurate with experience.
