McMaster Children s Hospital's (MCH) Child and Youth Mental Health Program (CYMHP) is one of Canada's largest pediatric mental health service providers. CYMHP offers a wide range of services for children, youth, and families experiencing complex mental health concerns. Our program includes a 22-bed inpatient unit, a short-stay mental health assessment unit, a day treatment program and a wide range of outpatient services.

Affiliated with McMaster University's Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences, and the Offord Centre for Child Studies, our program is committed to community partnerships, providing evidence based, integrated, coordinated, leading edge family and patient centered care. Position Summary

The Registered Nurse (RN) functions as a valuable member working primarily within the CYMHP inpatient service, providing care to children and youth with complex mental health issues. The RN is key in leading patient care, including but not limited to, establishment of effective therapeutic relationships, utilization of developmentally appropriate approaches to care, mental status examination, crisis management, implementation and evaluation of therapeutic interventions, and coordination of services. The RN offers mental health teaching to children, youth and families, demonstrates knowledge of all Ontario legislation that guides mental health care and is responsible for meeting the medical needs of clients, including medication management and education. The RN contributes to new and ongoing research and quality assurance projects.

Schedule Work Hours

Rotating days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays

Qualifications

Current Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse
Current certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI)
Evidence of minimum one (1) year, acute child and youth inpatient mental health experience within the past five (5) years
Demonstrated skill in effective crisis management
Demonstrated knowledge of child and youth mental health services
Demonstrated knowledge of psychopharmacology
Demonstrated knowledge in developmental psychology and psychopathology
Demonstrated knowledge of the mental health act, substitute decisions act, health care consent act, Personal Health Information Protection Act
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and establish therapeutic relationships with clients and team members
Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
Evidence of self-motivation, enthusiasm, and flexibility
