Job Summary

The Senior Accountant, Payroll & Time's primary responsibility is to act as the technical expert for SAP Payroll/Time operations. The role is the escalation point for all technical issues associated with the Payroll/Time function. This includes acting as a liaison between Payroll/Time, I&T and other functions within CN, optimization of existing business processes and developing solutions to new initiatives. The role is also responsible for developing and maintaining the technical skillset of the Payroll/Time function as well as overseeing and providing various levels of support, training, and documentation of Time/Payroll business processes across the CN network.

Main Responsibilities
Technical Expertise

Liaison between I&T and the Payroll/Time function. Facilitates translation of complex technical/business issues between both parties

Point of escalation for error resolution of all Payroll/Time issues encountered during day-to-day

Documentation of technical Payroll/Time processes and associated business processes

Provides technical solutions for current and future business process optimization

Involvement in special projects

Key resource for next generation solution for SAP Time/Payroll module

Skillset Development and Maintenance

Adds technical expertise to Payroll/Time process documents and supports training

Develops job aids and other support items to complement training

Provides support and direction for new and existing Payroll/Time reporting and processing tools

Support and Communication

Acts in collaboration with Payroll/Time BPS and other stakeholders (internal and external) to develop technical solutions which optimize current and future business processes

Involved in the creation and improvement of queries and reporting capabilities to develop cross-functional reporting solutions

Proficient with SAP time reports including those created by Payroll/Time module reporting software such as SpinifexIT

Documents technical solutions and collaborates to build knowledge repository

Helps provide training support across the CN network (including online training tools and service desk support)

Helps ensure that any new culture changes to payroll/time functionalities (workflow, reporting, time entry, etc) are communicated promptly and clearly to key stakeholders.

Working Conditions

The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress.

Requirements
Experience

5+ years of progressive I&T SAP payroll experience serving as a payroll/time technical expert within a large multinational corporation

Extensive technical SAP technical support and configuration expertise in Human Resources and Canadian and US Payroll and Time Modules

Excellent knowledge and understanding of accounting practices and procedures, payroll disciplines, taxation, treasury and the capacity to utilize these skills in daily interactions with various functional experts.

Ability to multi-task in high pressure situations.

Experience with various software applications including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Education/Certification/Designation

Bachelor's degree in I&T, Accounting, Finance, Commerce, Human Resources, or similar.

National Payroll Institute Certification and/or American Payroll Association Designation or equivalent payroll experience is an asset.

Technical Skills/Knowledge

Knowledge of the Company's operational systems and industry technologies relating to time entry, reporting, and processing (SAP, CTS, UKG)

Intermediate to advanced knowledge of CN's suite of productivity software, including Microsoft (MS) Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, and Word) and Access

Ability to extract and analyze large amounts of data using MS Office and other strategic data mining tools (i.e. Business Warehouse, Spinifex)

Ability to execute and coordinate multiple deliverables concurrently

Ability to conceptualize system process flows in order to understand interdependencies and cause-effect relationships

Possess facilitation skills to lead discovery sessions and collect business requirements

Knowledge of the organization and ability to network
