Description: The Department of Computer Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a Research Associate (Limited Term) for a 1-year appointment. The anticipated start date is April 22nd, 2024. The Research Associate is intrinsically involved in the research project where they contribute, by way of their academic expertise, to the project as directed by the principal investigator. The Research Associate is expected to carry out research responsibilities with a high degree of independence. The position includes the following responsibilities:

  • Designing and Developing Protocols: Creating innovative protocols and algorithms to enhance the functionality, efficiency, and security of distributed systems.
  • Experimental Evaluation: Conducting experimental tests on distributed systems to evaluate performance, scalability, and reliability. This may involve setting up testbeds, simulating workloads, and analyzing the impact of different system configurations.
  • Publishing Research Findings: Writing and publishing research papers, reports, and articles in academic journals, conference proceedings, and other scholarly venues to disseminate findings to the broader scientific community.
  • Collaborating with Industry and Academic Partners: Working closely with partners from academia and industry to identify research problems, share insights, and apply research findings to practical applications.
  • Grant Writing and Funding Proposals: Using subject matter knowledge in the field of research, contribute to the preparation of proposals to secure research funding from government agencies, industry partners, and academic institutions.
  • Mentoring Students: Providing research and subject matter knowledge guidance and mentorship to undergraduate and graduate students involved in distributed systems research projects.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education - PhD in Computer Science
  • Experience – 5 years of Post-doctoral experience with demonstrated academic and research expertise in the field of distributed systems.
  • Skills – Strong background in distributed systems and machine learning. Ability to work independently with strong problem-solving skills. Track record designing and executing experiments to support research activities and projects in the lab. Track record publishing and presenting research at top computer systems venues. Strong track record of system software development. Additional skills required include: Strong track record supervising research trainees. Excellent communication skills. Excellent conflict resolution skills.
