Your opportunity: The Department of Molecular Genetics holds a leadership position in Canada and internationally as a premier venue for biomedical and life sciences research and education. We have over 100 faculty members. Our dynamic community of over 350 graduate students is engaged in M.Sc. and Ph.D. Program in Molecular Genetics. We offer a professional M.Sc. in Genetic Counseling as well as M.H.Sc. in Medical Genomics. Furthermore, the department provides a rigorous undergraduate specialist and major in Molecular Genetics and Microbiology. Our faculty, fellows, and students are highly acclaimed for pioneering phenomenal advances in some of the most exciting areas of modern science with a profound impact on human health.

Collaborating closely with the Principal Investigator, the Bioinformatics Database Analyst will be working in a small bioinformatics team, and will develop, maintain and advising on the design of software and database solutions that will help researchers, clinicians, and knowledge users analyze and interpret RNA viruses and virus-like agents across exabyte-scale public sequence datasets.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing, optimizing and maintaining databases for various data sets collected and analyzed, including gathering and preparing clinical and genomic patient datasets, and organizing them into databases
  • Conducting and applying data cleaning, data normalization, data visualization methods; and using machine learning methods for patient classification
  • Researching, maintaining and advising on the design of new features/improvements to software solutions, such as the precision medicine clinical decision support system
  • Writing programming demands and computational procedures for data analysis; and conducting statistical analysis of various datasets, incorporating clinical and genomic patient information
  • Maintaining log of programming language and analysis measures used
  • Presenting data and communicates work plans, progress reports and results of data analysis with colleagues, fellow researchers, and collaborators
  • Contributing to scientific papers that may be published
  • Updating and revising key features and layout of the decision support system, including updating data structures, algorithms, and graphical user interfaces

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience
  • Minimum four (4) years' experience in programming and statistical analysis in Python, R, or other similar programming language
  • Demonstrated experience with SQL database and experience with graph databases (Neo4j)
  • Experience gathering and preparing clinical and genomic patient datasets
  • Demonstrated experience with Unix and shell scripting
  • Experience working with high-performance computer clusters, both on-premise and cloud
  • Experience with web development and data visualization
  • Demonstrated experience drafting and delivering presentations
  • Demonstrated experience with cloud-computing infrastructure (AWS/Azure/GCP)
  • Strong expertise in Python/R programming is required
  • Familiarity with software packages optimized for genomic analysis
  • Familiarity with gathering and organizing public datasets of genomic relevance
  • Strong knowledge of best practices for software engineering and reproducible research in bioinformatics
  • Strong communication skills, the ability to work effectively in a team
  • Excellent problem solving skills, analytical ability, presentation and communication skills, interpersonal skills, initiative/motivation, organizational skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team
  • Must be able to prioritize tasks independently, and beadaptable to changing needs
