The Opportunity:

This role will be responsible for driving growth and profitability of a Professional Liability portfolio through underwriting, business development and managing of products and services of complex risks. Key products include Architects and Engineers E&O, Contractors Professional Liability, and Miscellaneous Professional Liability. This position requires specialized knowledge of underwriting concepts, practices, procedures and techniques to include coverage issues, product lines, business development, and an ability to drive profitable growth in the marketplace.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible to profitably grow a large portfolio through superior risk selection and strong broker relationships within the Professional Liability space.
  • Contributes a significant portion of the team's profitability (PTOI) and new business growth, meeting/exceeding individual targets.
  • Leads discussions with key external partners on market conditions, and provides coaching within the team on delivering challenging messages.
  • Provides recommendations into portfolio optimization and profitable growth strategy both regionally and nationally.
  • Proficiently understands policy wordings and endorsements including their impact on claims scenarios.
  • Has a solution-oriented approach to underwriting, including use of creative ideas to drive profitable business.
  • Regularly leads broker and client meetings effectively and is seen as an expert in the Professional Liability space.
  • Support, coaches and mentors other employees on business development, sales skills, and relationship management.
  • Mentors and guides others in planning, time management, productivity, and efficiency
  • Acts as a key referral point for other team members.
  • Leads by example within the team to set the standard for creating a positive Liberty experience for our key brokers and customers.
  • Seeks out best practices and trends in the industry at large for continuous improvement at Liberty and is an early adapter for new systems and processes.
  • Helps elevate overall underwriting knowledge through regular posts and commentary on Teams and actively contributes in team meetings.
  • Champion Liberty Values and Guidelines for Inclusion to cultivate a best in class culture.
  • Challenge the status quo within Professional Liability, with an emphasis on making the underwriting process more efficient and externally, making it easier to do business with LMC.
  • Builds personal DE&I knowledge and acts as an early adopter of new DE&I skills and process/policy changes.
  • Recommend and implements on new ideas to drive stronger business results with an emphasis on the three Liberty Mutual Canada goals –an inspiring culture, a customer-centric mentality and a best-in-class operating model.
  • Leads account rounding efforts through upselling additional lines of coverage to renewal business.
  • Create and executes on prospecting initiatives for the Professional Liability practice.
  • Ensure proper organization and documentation of each underwriting file.
  • Perform related duties as requested to include, but not limited to, report preparation, presentations, and special projects to assist in ensuring the success of the product line unit.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education including relevant Insurance designation(s)/education is considered an asset.
  • A minimum of 5 years of insurance industry experience that includes working experience with Professional Liability underwriting or broking.
  • Considered an expert in the Professional Liability fields with advanced knowledge of underwriting concepts, practices, and procedures within the industry.
  • Proven track record of building strong broker and client relationships; providing market leading service, fostering an engaging work environment, and championing operational and technology initiatives aimed at enhancing underwriting productivity.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with a strong ability to multi-task.
  • Motivated, client service oriented, and highly responsive.
  • Strong ability to negotiate and confident decision maker.
  • Highly effective communication skills.
  • Self-starter with strong analytical skills, in addition to strong business and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work through complex issues in order to meet deadlines.
  • Advanced knowledge of the suite of Microsoft Office applications, specifically Microsoft Excel.
  • Comfortable with critical thinking and a growth mindset, with thoughtful consideration of diverse perspectives during decision-making and respectful of differences.
