About Novacom

Novacom is a Surrey-based General Contractor delivering commercial and multi-family projects across BC, from complex interiors for national brands and institutional clients through to ground-up base building work. We value people, relationships, innovation and culture, and we're committed to doing construction differently by continually improving how we work, build and collaborate. We believe in partnership, and 80% of our work is repeat clients.

The Role

We're hiring a Project Accountant for our Surrey finance team. You'll be the dedicated accounting partner to one of our project teams, owning the financial side of their jobs from setup through closeout: billing, costs, subcontractor payments, compliance and reporting. You'll work alongside our current Project Accountant and report to our Director of Finance.

Requirements

What You'd Run

The money side of your team's projects, start to finish, working with the Project Managers and Project Coordinators who run the jobs and the Project Director who owns the client relationship.

  • Project setup: budgets, contracts and commitments set up cleanly in Procore and Acumatica so the job starts right
  • Progress draws: monthly owner billings prepared, submitted and followed through to payment
  • Subcontractor billings: reviewed against the contract, holdbacks applied under the Builders Lien Act, and paid on time
  • Trade compliance: WorkSafeBC clearances, insurance and contract documents current before money goes out
  • Job costing: costs reviewed and coded correctly the first time, not fixed at month-end
  • The monthly cycle: cost reports, budget reconciliations and variance analysis, worked through with your PMs so issues surface early
  • Forecasting: cost and revenue forecasts your Project Director can trust
  • Closeout: substantial completion, holdback release and final accounts, worked the whole way through
  • Our technology stack: Procore, Acumatica and Microsoft 365

What We Need to See

  • 5+ years of project accounting in commercial construction, ideally with a general contractor. You have owned a portfolio of jobs, not only supported one
  • Hands-on Procore experience: commitments, subcontractor invoices, change events and budget views. Please be specific on your resume about what you did in it
  • Working knowledge of construction accounting and the BC Builders Lien Act, including holdbacks
  • Comfortable across multiple projects with competing deadlines, and still accurate
  • Clear, direct communication with PMs, trades and suppliers
  • Acumatica experience is an asset
  • Post-secondary education in accounting or finance is an asset; CPA progress is a plus
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada and able to work from our Surrey office four days a week

What We're Looking For

  • You catch it before month-end. A miscoded invoice in week one is a five-minute fix. In week four it's a reconciliation problem
  • You tell your PM the truth about the numbers, early. We would rather hear about a cost overrun in month three than discover it at closeout
  • You hold the line on compliance. No clearance, no cheque, and you can say that kindly to a trade who wants to be paid
  • You keep the file clean because you'd want it later. Holdback releases and audits go smoothly when the paperwork was done right the first time
  • You want to set the standard, not inherit one. Our project accounting processes and KPIs are still evolving, and how you run your projects will shape how we run them all
  • Trades are partners, not resources. Paying them accurately and on time is part of how we keep good ones. We hire humble, generous people and it shows

Benefits

What We Offer

  • Pay: $75,000 to $90,000 base, depending on experience
  • Profit sharing. Everyone here shares in company profitability
  • Comprehensive benefit plan
  • Hybrid and flexible. Four days in the office, one from home, with flexible hours
  • Tools to do the job properly. Procore, Acumatica and Microsoft 365, fully licensed and trained
  • Room to grow. We support training, courses and conferences, and there's real scope to shape this role as the team grows
  • Close-knit team. A flat structure, regular one-to-ones with your manager, staff lunches and an annual retreat. Small enough that you're known, supported and pushed to grow
  • Giving back. Locally that includes the ICBA Foundation, which funds trades bursaries and mental health support across BC construction. Further afield, we send teams to El Salvador every year with Homes + Hope, 200+ homes built for families in need so far

To Apply

Apply with your resume. We thank all applicants; only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
