In North America, we partner with public, private, and non-profit clients to shape the future of transportation, infrastructure, and communities. With expertise spanning strategy, advisory, planning, and design, we help clients achieve meaningful results and exceed their financial and strategic goals. With ten offices across Canada, the USA, and Mexico, our people-centred approach and deep expertise enables us to tackle the most complex challenges – building prosperity, resilience, and equity across neighbourhoods, cities, and regions. Wherever organizations are developing transportation systems or delivering on-the-ground services, Steer is committed to enhancing their impact. Role Overview

We are seeking a Team Lead to join our growing Design for Movement team in North America. This role blends deep expertise in client management and business development with strategic project direction and team management demonstrated through technical expertise and experience in the fields of wayfinding, signage and information design. You will lead projects from concept to implementation and ensure high-quality, user-centred outcomes for complex environments such as transport hubs, campuses, districts, and civic spaces.

As a client-facing team lead, you will also contribute to diversify and grow our offer, thought leadership, market insight, and the evolution of Steer's approach to wayfinding and user experience.

Key Responsibilities

Client and Business Development

  • Build and maintain strong client relationships through collaborative, high-quality service.
  • Lead or support proposal development, presentations, and contract negotiations.
  • Identify and pursue opportunities to grow Steer's presence in North America and beyond.

Project Leadership

  • Lead the delivery of wayfinding and information design projects, from early strategy to implementation.
  • Coordinate interdisciplinary project teams across planning, graphic design, architecture, and technology.
  • Manage budgets, schedules, deliverables, and risk while ensuring quality and design integrity.

Wayfinding Strategy and Design

  • Develop system-wide wayfinding strategies rooted in behavioural insights, spatial logic, and inclusive design principles.
  • Guide the development of signage hierarchies, messaging frameworks, mapping, and digital tools.
  • Conduct site visits, user journey mapping, and stakeholder engagement to inform user-centred outcomes.
  • Support project delivery though fabrication and implementation stages on behalf of our clients, ensuring high-quality delivery and compliance.

Service and Team Development

  • Mentor junior staff and foster an inclusive, design-forward team culture.
  • Contribute to the growth of our Design for Movement practice and offering through innovation, thought leadership, and continuous improvement.
  • Work collaboratively alongside internal stakeholders to manage team workload & project delivery.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of professional experience in wayfinding, experiential graphic design, or related spatial design fields in a consulting or agency environment.
  • Proven experience in business development, proposal writing, and client management.
  • Demonstrated leadership in delivering complex, multidisciplinary projects on a scale.
  • Strong client management and communication skills, with experience presenting to diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience working in a consultancy or agency environment.
  • Strong graphic and typographic skill set
  • Strong knowledge of signage and wayfinding strategies and solutions, including fabrication details and accessibility guidelines
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Graphic/Product/Information Design, or related field.
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop)

Desirable Skills

  • 3D design, mapping, and/or BIM software skills
  • Service design, customer journey mapping, UX/UI design

Benefits

For our Canadian applicants, we offer a competitive package of benefits including private medical, dental, and vision insurance, a group Share Incentive Plan, a 3% RRSP contribution and a discretionary yearly bonus based on annual compensation (dependent upon individual and company performance).

Additionally, we offer up to 47 paid days off - 22 vacation days, 13 public holidays, 2 volunteering days and 10 sick days – as well as a bi-annual performance review process.

Our evaluation processes are designed around merit and capability. We don't select people on the prestige of their educational establishments or other background information. Our interviewers are trained on how to manage selection processes fairly and without bias, and to conduct processes which do not selectively appeal more to one or more demographic to the detriment of any others.
