Position Description:
Instructor Guard and Supervising Instructor Guard:
- To safeguard life and prevent accidents at the County swimming pools and to teach swimming programs and promote good relations with users of the facilities.
- Responsible for safety supervision, class management, and risk management during the instructional classes.
- Works according to Occupational Health and Safety Act, Lifesaving Society Standards, and corporate policies and procedures
- Provide instruction to individuals and groups in organized instructional classes
- Prepare lesson plans, organize equipment, teach and evaluate swim classes in accordance with the standards established by the Lifesaving Society and Norfolk County. Classes may also include advanced leadership courses, aquafitness and mobility programs
- Complete all documentation related to class instruction such as but not limited to attendance, completing report cards, and inputting participant results into recreation software system
- Perform lifeguard duties during recreational swims, rental groups, and other aquatics programs. Ensure compliance with Regulation 565 and Norfolk County policies and procedures including performing rescues and first aid when required.
- Ability to use critical thinking and react in an emergency situation which may involve first aid or a building emergency.
- Assist with special pool programs and special County aquatic events/water safety initiatives that are held at the pool or at other locations
- Attend and participate in aquatic division meetings and in-house training sessions that are organized by the Supervisor, Aquatics
- Participate in team building with all staff.
- Complete any necessary reports and documentation associated with pool operation to include but not limited to shift reports in the pool logbook, incident reports, pool fouling reports, water readings, etc.
- Provide professional and courteous customer service at all times to include greeting customers, answering phone calls, assisting customers with inquiries and online registration/booking system, accepting payments –including cash transactions during the shift (i.e., taking registrations, issuing passes and pass cards, and issuing receipts
- Help to maintain the pool facility by performing regulated water tests, equipment checks, cleaning and sanitization duties in accordance with Ministry of Health and Norfolk County policies. Report all problems to Supervisor, Aquatics
- Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor, Aquatics
Supervising Instructor Guard specifically:
- To supervise and provide direction to student staff and ensure staff are following legislative requirements and County policies and procedures.
- Ability to direct staff and patrons in an emergency and ensure documentation is complete
- Provide support for staff and act as a role model/mentor
- Complete instructor and guarding evaluations as directed by Supervisor, Aquatics
- Balance cash at the end of shift – specific to Delhi Kinsmen Pool
Requirements
Qualifications: *all qualifications must be current
Instructor Guard and Supervising Instructor Guard:
- Must be a minimum of 15 years of age and currently enrolled in a secondary education institution or institution of high learning on a full-time basis and be returning to school full-time at the next available term.
- Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor
- National Lifeguard certification
- Standard First Aid with C.P.R., Level C, A.E.D.
- High 5 – Principles of Healthy Child Development (an asset)
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Working knowledge of Recreation Management Software, preferably XPLOR/Perfect Mind considered an asset
Supervising Instructor Guard specifically:
- Lifesaving Society Instructor
- Aquafitness Certification through CALA or Water ART or willing to obtain certification (an asset)
- Lifesaving Society Aquatic Supervisor Training (an asset)
- One year experience as an Instructor Guard to become familiar with scope of position, or equivalent previous experience

- High degree of alertness and vigilance with attention to detail as it relates to the pool environment.
- Excellent time management, problem solving, interpersonal and communication skills
- Excellent customer service skills and the ability to deal with challenging customer service situations

- Strong organizational and instructional skills
- Proven leadership ability, excellent staff relations skills and ability to work as a team member
- Ability to plan and manage special events
- Must be aware of safe work practices as they relate to job responsibilities and work environment and have a basic understanding of Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Position: Instructor Guard OR Instructor Guard/Supervising Instructor Guard (up to 9 positions)
Status: Student (up to 24 hours per week),
Note: Recreation and Aquatics is a 7-day operation. Must be available and willing to work early mornings, days, weekends, evenings and holidays.
Note: This student position will continue until such employee reaches the completion of school and therefore is no longer defined as a student, unless terminated prior to that time.
Employee Group: Non-Union
Wage: Instructor Guard - $23.75 per hour/ Supervising Instructor Guard - $26.10 per hour
