About our Studio

MakeLab brings 3D printers, laser cutters, robot arms, t-shirt printers and all sorts of creative tools to events, showing people how to be creative in new ways. We've produced over 1000 experiences around the world, partnering with agencies and brands like Samsung, Microsoft, Adidas, Adobe, Autodesk, and eBay.

We're opening a retail store location at STACKT Market in Toronto, where we'll prototype new event experiences by inviting the public to explore, create, and play. The store will feature a few curated rotating monthly experiences, as well as offer a wide range of online offerings via Etsy, Shopify, and more.

Job Description

You'll be responsible for our retail operations, including our brick-and-mortar location at STACKT Market, and across our online channels (Etsy, Shopify, private orders, etc). This is a managerial, strategic, and customer-facing role. It will require an entrepreneurial mindset, and will draw upon experience in service, design, and logistics. With the support of our close-knit team, you'll:

  1. Manage the day-to-day operations of our physical and online store. Our store hours are noon-8pm Tuesday through Sunday. While you won't be expected to work all of it, you will most of it.
  2. Plan out the products, services, and experiences we'll offer to our retail customers, in collaboration with our creative director.
  3. Serve our customers personally. Most of the time, you will be the only staffperson in the store.
  4. Host workshops and run STACKT event partnerships. We're STACKT's in-house experiential vendors.
  5. Attract, hire, and coordinate staff as required to support busier days or projects.
  6. Setup and manage all infrastructure, digital and physical, to serve all our clients. This will include managing our online presence and shipping logistics.
  7. Handle production and shipping of bulk orders as required.
  8. Create our own products for grab-and-go walk-in customers, purchase third-party products to carry in the store, and manage inventory.
  9. Support our marketing efforts with content creation from the store.

Requirements

General Requirements

  1. Retail or hospitality experience. We'll want to see experience serving folks, whether it be in a restaurant or retail environment. Ideally you have experience as a manager in one of these areas.
  2. Design experience. You'll need to demonstrate that you have solid graphic design experience, and familiarity with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. We'll want to see a portfolio of artwork or side projects.
  3. Experience running an online store. Whether your side-hustle or main thing, we'll want to see someone who has experience selling online. This may be a small Etsy store or other ways you've commercialized.
  4. Social media savvy. You'll need to show us that you can use social media skillfully.
  5. Driver's License.
  6. Passport and ability to travel for work, including to the USA.

We also have a set of values we expect our team to work by. These go on your contract, we train on these, we evaluate each other against this, and we frame critique through this lens:

  1. Be strategic and thoughtful. We're organized and efficient. Our strategies can withstand questioning by each other. We can demonstrate a logic-flow behind our decisions and how they're in service of our goals.
  2. Add energy. We're positive and playful. We raise up those around us. We speak up positively in tough situations.
  3. Listen. We seek to understand before making ourselves understood. We are empathetic and respectful. We invite feedback from each other.
  4. Don't tolerate problems. We act with a sense of urgency. We take ownership and are accountable. We build long-term solutions to permanently solve problems. We are proactive.
  5. Respect design. We understand the value of design and presentation. We're plugged into aesthetic trends and standards in marketing and beyond. Our shit looks nice.

Benefits

  • $60,000 starting salary
  • Cell phone plan covered
  • Group health benefits begin at the 3-month mark
