We're looking for a mission-driven Youth Recreational & Leisure Activities Counsellor who is passionate about creating more accessible, inclusive, and equitable communities across Canada where people with low vision have unlimited opportunities and can experience life free from barriers and discrimination.
Your Impact at CNIB- Support senior staff with bookings, registrations, materials requests and technology use.
- Supervise program participants during planned educational and recreational activities, group discussions and leisure time.
- Assist staff in meal planning and facilitation to ensure proper nutrition for program participants.
- Assist in the planning and implementation of all Learning Academy Programming (SCORE Scholars, Primary Explorers, Junior Explorers & Young Achievers) and additional children and youth in-person day programming as requested.
- Coordinate applications, conduct interviews of prospective participants.
- Assist with administrative tasks including parent/participant correspondence, achievement certificate preparation, attendance records, achievement point tracking toward incentives, and report cards.
- Respond to general inquiries regarding summer programs.
- Ensure participants have all necessary materials in preferred format.
- Assist in the recruitment of volunteers for summer camps and coordinate volunteer orientation sessions as well as required materials.
- Accompany and supervise participants on day trips.
- Provide ongoing support to Learning Academy participants in a mentoring role.
- Distribute and collect assignments from program participants.
- Provide scheduled guests and speakers with Zoom links and relevant instructions.
- Manage Zoom meetings including opening sessions, coordination of participants and monitoring of break-out rooms as required.
- Assist Guest Speakers with screen sharing and technical requirements.
- Demonstrate assistive technology, including Voiceover and various apps for iPhone and iPad (instruction is provided).
- Assist with program documentation and recording of outcomes.
Requirements
Who you are:Education and Certifications
- Post Secondary student studying a related field (i.e. recreation or community outreach) preferred.
Experience and Qualifications
- Experience working with the general public.
- Ability to live on campus overnight as part of the annual SCORE Scholars program for a period of two weeks (will include some weekend days) that will fall within the last two weeks of July and the first week of August (July 19th to August 10th).
- Office availability(in-person) on all other dates OR virtual as required by circumstance.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Good social media and computer skills, including working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook and Zoom.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Strong interpersonal and diplomacy skills.
- Demonstrates mature and sensitive nature when dealing with the needs of people experiencing sight loss.
- Knowledge of not-for-profit community resources is an asset
- Working knowledge of technical aids and devices for people with sight loss is an asset.
- Must be mature and responsible.
- Must be able to work independently.
- Must be able to travel independently within the region via public transit or car (taxi, Uber etc.)
- Personal or professional experience relating to blindness and sight loss is considered an asset.
- Personal or professional experience working with assistive technology and/or accessible environments is considered an asset.
