Overview of the Apprenticeship Program:

The Electrical Apprentice Training Alliance (The Alliance) is a non-profit organization funded by the Greater Toronto Electrical Contractors Association (Greater Toronto ECA) and collaborates with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), Local 353 to oversee apprenticeship programs. The Alliance provides comprehensive training and work experience opportunities (through IBEW 353) for apprentices to develop their skills (including safety classes) in the electrical industry.

  • ICI – Construction and Maintenance Electrician – Industrial, Commercial, and Institutional: Initially there is an 1,800-hour Pre-Apprenticeship Program that must be completed to become a Registered Apprentice in the 309A Construction & Maintenance Electrician sector. The duration of the ICI apprenticeship is typically 9,000 hours and takes between five (5) and six (6) years to complete. With our Program, a 750-hour education credit will be applied (9,000 hrs – 750 hrs = 8,250 hrs), with proof of your Math, English, and Physics from the Ontario High School curriculum (or equivalent - ACE or ICAS).

  • In this field, a considerable amount of time is spent working at heights, either up ladders or on elevated work platforms as well as in confined spaces.
  • Standing, walking and climbing are all part of daily work activities.
  • The electrical trade is such that being colour blind would seriously restrict your ability to perform the required tasks.
  • The job involves indoor and outdoor work, including potential extreme weather conditions in all seasons.

Requirements

All Applicants must:

✓ Be a Canadian Citizen or a Permanent Resident – An Applicant must be a Canadian Citizen or a Permanent Resident to complete this apprenticeship (this is a full-time, 5-6 year program).

✓ Have a Resume to upload – Applicants will need to submit an up-to-date resume

✓ Have 2 Professional References - Contact information for references including phone numbers and email addresses (by adding your references to the application, you are giving us permission to contact them)

✓ Respond to short answer essay questions – Applicants will need to answer short answer essay questions on the application form.

✓ Have proof of educational pre-requisites – Applicants will need to submit their high school transcripts demonstrating the completion of 1 Math, 1 English, and 1 Physics from the chart below. These educational foundations are key tools for trade school completion and program success.

✓ Must upload the applicable documents from the options below:

  • OSSD or The Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC), (replacing the GED as of Summer 2024)

AND

  • A High School transcript that has mandatory Math, Physics and English courses

OR

  • A TVO ILC (https://www.ilc.org/) report to prove completion of mandatory Math, Physics and English courses

OR

If you didn't receive your secondary school education in Ontario:

✓ Be able to work in the geographical area specific to the Apprenticeship. 80% of learning is done on-the-job while under the supervision of a licensed journeyperson. The geographical area covered is from Lake Ontario north to Parry Sound, and from Trenton in the east to Oakville in the west. An employer could send an apprentice to a jobsite anywhere within this area. Apprentices are required to provide their own transportation to the jobsite. Most work days begin at 7 a.m.

✓ Be able to attend mandatory training and Trade School in the GTA. The program also requires attendance to Supplementary Training Classes (STC) and Safety Courses on some evenings and Saturdays (located at the Alliance in Richmond Hill as well as various locations in the GTA) as well as Trade School, which account for 20% of the apprenticeship program. These classes are designed to provide apprentices with the skills and knowledge they require prior to attending Trade School and to train the next generation of Electricians and be the very best in the industry.
