Basic Function:

Assists the Supervisor, Waste Management with preparing proposals, tenders, and reports. Develops options/recommendations and evaluates current and future waste collection and diversion programs, and coordinates communication and outreach material related to waste programs. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate of a post-secondary degree, diploma or certificate program in Environmental Science/Management, Geography, Environmental/Urban Planning, Education, Business Communication or a related field of study.

Position Description:

  • Provide daily assistance with respect to curbside waste collection operations and customer service to ensure consistency with the county's policies and procedures.
  • Assist with special events and open houses, including, development of promotional and educational materials, coordinating service delivery of contractors on-site, and transporting and setting up displays and tents
  • Measure, monitor and analyze collection programs through visual curbside audits, including, hands-on sampling, data collection and reporting/analysis of results.
  • Assist in the implementation and review of curbside waste collection programs, operations, By-Laws and policies.
  • Receive and respond to customer complaints concerning missed collection and general inquiries about waste management programs, including discussing applicable concerns with contractors.
  • Assist contractors with contract interpretation.
  • Provide support to staff and contractors at transfer stations by assisting with collection related issues, program issues and contractor issues.
  • Assist in the creation and evaluation of Request for Proposals (RFPs), tenders and reports for waste collections, processing, reuse and disposal. Participate in contract discussions and maintenance.
  • Communicate with local municipalities, community stakeholders and internal/external customers to address waste collection and program issues.
  • Data entry and analysis of tonnage data for various waste streams to prepare statistics and reports.
  • Assist with analysis of waste management data for the preparation of technical reports, work plans and project and budget approvals.
  • Assist with waste container inventory and purchasing, ensuring database is accurate.
  • Research future waste diversion programs and disposal options for potential development and implementation.
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Three year college diploma program i.e. in Environmental Technology, Environmental Science or related field of study

OR

  • 4 year University degree program i.e. Environmental studies, Geography or related field of study
  • One year of relevant experience to be familiar with scope of the position would be an asset

Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience in solid waste management is ideal
  • Familiarity with composting, recycling and waste processing/transfer equipment and facilities
  • Knowledge of relevant Acts and Regulations
  • Experience teaching/presenting to a variety of age groups is an asset
  • Experience undertaking waste audits is an asset
  • Valid Ontario driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Computer expertise in corporate standard software (Microsoft Office) and department specific software to data search and entry and to create and modify word processed documents
  • Must be aware of safe work practices as they relate to job responsibilities and work environment, and have the basic understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
