Interested in making a difference in our province? We encourage you to Choose GNB!

Who we are:

The work we do has a positive impact on our communities and helps improve the everyday lives of New Brunswickers. Together, we are over 45,000 New Brunswickers who are passionate problem-solvers, who make a difference and are proud to call New Brunswick home.

The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development is seeking a Learning Specialist for Professional Learning to join the Digital Learning and System Excellence Branch. The Learning Specialist provides provincial leadership in designing, coordinating, and advancing teacher-centred professional learning that aligns educator growth with student learning needs and improved student outcomes.

The position plays a key role in advancing Education Plan Action A.5- Professional Learning Framework and supporting the New Brunswick Standards of Practice for Teachers, working closely with districts, schools, the NBTA, post-secondary institutions, the Learning Specialist responsible for leadership development and NB Lead, and other partners, while recognizing the distinct roles and responsibilities of partners across the education system.

What you will do:

  • Lead implementation and ongoing development of Education Plan Action A.5 - Professional Learning Framework, including defining provincial expectations for ongoing professional learning, aligning it with student outcomes and Education Plan priorities, and monitoring participation and impact.
  • Coordinate with districts, schools, the NBTA, post-secondary institutions, and professional learning providers to strengthen coherence across professional learning priorities, resources, and supports, and serve as a provincial liaison to identify emerging needs.
  • Collaborate with district professional learning leads and coordinators to share effective practices, and with the Learning Specialist responsible for leadership development and NB Lead to align teacher professional learning with school leadership development.
  • Promote evidence-informed professional learning that is teacher-centred, collaborative, sustained, and connected to student learning, including job-embedded and inquiry-based approaches such as the Cycle of Inquiry and professional learning communities.
  • Guide departmental and district teams in designing and evaluating professional learning using principles of adult learning and instructional design, and develop practical approaches to monitoring participation and impact on educator practice and, where appropriate, student outcomes.
  • Support the integration of the New Brunswick Standards of Practice for Teachers into professional learning and early career supports.
  • Manage the Professional Learning Hub and coordinate provincial professional learning planning and calendars to align efforts and reduce duplication across the Department and districts.
  • Advise departmental teams on the professional learning and training needs of provincial initiatives (such as digital literacy and AI), including in-person, virtual, blended, and job-embedded approaches.
  • Coordinate provincial supports for early career teachers, including induction, mentorship, and coaching, in partnership with districts and educational partners.
  • Support the development of classroom management training and classroom readiness expectations with post-secondary institutions, and the alignment of teacher preparation with classroom realities.
  • Advise the educator recruitment and retention team, and contribute to retention strategies through effective early career supports.
  • Manage budgets and resources for provincial professional learning initiatives, develop communication strategies to promote opportunities and supports, and contribute to branch and departmental planning.
  • Travel within the province, including occasional work in schools with teachers and, at times, in the presence of students.

Who you are:

You are a collaborative leader who is passionate about professional learning and its impact on teaching and student learning. You are skilled at bringing people and ideas together, building strong relationships, and turning priorities into practical approaches that support educators. You are comfortable working across schools, districts, and provincial teams and can balance system-wide direction with the needs and realities of educators.
