JOB PURPOSE

The Trauma Nurse is an RNCA position within the DECH Emergency Department that provides experienced clinical support and leadership in the assessment and management of trauma and other high­acuity patients. Working as part of the multidisciplinary team, the Trauma Nurse coordinates care from initial presentation through stabilization, treatment, and final disposition or transfer, ensuring safe, timely, and evidence-informed care.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current registration with the College of Nursing of New Brunswick (CNNB).
  • Current BCLS certification/ RQI certification.
  • Current ACLS certification/ Current PALS certification.
  • Completion of Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC), Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course (ENPC)
  • Completion of EPICC foundations, Pediatrics and Trauma or willingness to obtain.
  • Current advanced care nursing competencies.
  • Demonstrated experience caring for high-acuity and trauma patients.
  • Strong clinical assessment, critical-thinking and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and unpredictable environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • INFO debrief certification or willingness to obtain.
  • Minimum 5 years Emergency Department experience or 2 years with the completion of the Critical Care Course.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in the competencies of BCLS, ACLS, PALS, CTAS, Advanced Nursing Competencies, Emergency Pediatric Nursing (ENPC}, Trauma Nursing (TNCC}, and Basic 12 lead ECG interpretation as demonstrated by certification and/or written and practical testing.
  • Demonstrated assessment skills and ability to function independently with minimal supervision.
  • Good work record and ability to attend work on a regular basis.
  • Ability to perform the duties of the position.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

In addition to the responsibilities of an Emergency Department RN, the Trauma Nurse will:

  • Participate in trauma activations and assume an appropriate role within the trauma team.
  • Provide comprehensive and timely assessment of trauma patients.
  • Support the stabilization and resuscitation of critically injured patients.
  • Assist with the coordination of nursing care during trauma activations.
  • Anticipate patient and team needs during high-acuity trauma events.
  • Prepare and assist with trauma procedures, needed departmental procedures, equipment, medications and blood products, including mass transfusion protocol.
  • Collaborate closely with the Emergency Department physician and multidisciplinary team.
  • Monitor patient response to interventions and communicate changes in condition promptly.
  • Support the coordination of diagnostic investigations, consultations and patient transfers.
  • Ensure accurate and timely documentation of trauma care.
  • Assist with the safe transition of patients to inpatient units, critical care or receiving facilities.
  • Participate in trauma debriefings following significant events.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality regarding all aspects of work.
  • Provide support and guidance to nurses developing their trauma knowledge and skills.
  • Identify and communicate opportunities to improve trauma care and patient safety.
  • Completes annual advanced nursing competencies related to emergency care.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality regarding all aspects of work.
