The Attorney General is the law officer of the Executive Council and is responsible to see that the administration of public affairs is in accordance with the law and to ensure protection of the public interest. The Legal Services Branch provides civil and constitutional legal advice and representation to all provincial government departments and related agencies.

The Office of the Attorney General is seeking an individual to join the Legal Services Branch as Lawyer 1 or 2 within the Litigation Group.

What you will do

The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting litigation and appearing in all levels of courts and before administrative boards and tribunals throughout the province. The successful candidate will also be responsible for conducting research in specialized areas of the law and providing legal opinions and advice to government departments and agencies.

Need to have:

  • Law Degree;
  • Membership in good standing or eligibility for membership in good standing with the Law Society of New Brunswick;
  • Minimum of 8 years at the bar for the Lawyer 2 position, and a minimum of 4 years at the bar for the Lawyer 1 position;
  • Recent experience in litigation, including experience conducting hearings before any level of court, boards or tribunals.
  • Successful candidates will be required to undergo a criminal history clearance and security clearance check.

Written and spoken competence in English is required. Please state your language capability.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: The following operational requirements are also required:

  • Travel;
  • Possession of a valid driver's license; and
  • Working outside of regular hours of work without prior notice.

Nice to Have (their asset qualifications)

Preference may be given to candidates who demonstrate, commensurate with years at the bar:

  • Additional years of litigation experience
  • Experience in class action proceedings

Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

Wage

Lawyer 1 - $90,277 to $143,107 annually, depending on education, experience, and/or years of admission to a Canadian law society

Lawyer 2 - $144,539 to $189,388 annually, depending on education, experience, and/or years of admission to a Canadian law society.

Work environment

  • Location: Chancery Place, 675 King Street, Fredericton, NB
  • Opportunity for occasional hybrid work arrangement, subject to operational requirements and with prior approval from management
  • Standard hours of work: Monday - Friday, 8:15-4:30
  • Minimum 36.25 work hours per week
