The position

Discount Fuels is seeking a safety-focused Class 3 or Class 1 driver to deliver home heating oil to customers in the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) area.

This is a permanent, year-round position offering 40 paid hours each week regardless of seasonal delivery volume. Previous heating-oil delivery experience is not required. We will provide paid training in fuel delivery, company procedures, equipment operation and Transportation of Dangerous Goods requirements.

The driver will report to our office at 3451 Barrington Street in Halifax at the beginning of the workday.

Responsibilities

• Safely operate a tandem home-heating-oil delivery truck
• Complete approximately 15-40 customer deliveries per day, depending on route, distance and seasonal demand
• Complete required pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections
• Follow fuel-handling, delivery, spill-prevention and customer-site safety procedures
• Confirm delivery locations and complete delivery records accurately
• Communicate route progress, customer concerns and safety issues
• Provide professional and respectful customer service
• Maintain the cleanliness and general condition of the assigned vehicle
• Work outdoors in varying weather conditions when it is safe to do so
• Stop or postpone a delivery when site, weather or equipment conditions are unsafe

Qualifications

• Valid Nova Scotia Class 3 driver's licence with air-brake endorsement, or a valid Class 1 licence with air-brake endorsement
• Ability to operate the transmission of the assigned vehicle
• Manual-transmission commercial driving experience is an asset
• Previous heating-oil, fuel, bulk-liquid or route-delivery experience is an asset but is not required
• Strong safety judgement and attention to detail
• Reliable attendance and punctuality
• Ability to communicate professionally with customers and dispatch
• Ability to safely lift, carry, pull and control equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation
• Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
• Ability to provide a driver's abstract satisfactory to the company's insurance requirements

Training

Paid training will be provided to applicants who have the appropriate commercial driver's licence but do not have previous heating-oil delivery experience.

Previous TDG training is an asset, but the successful candidate will receive employer-specific training and certification before completing unsupervised deliveries.
