The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking an individual to join the Forest Operations and Development Branch, as a Scale and Utilization Technician, located in Miramichi.

Who we are: The Department of Natural Resources is responsible for protecting and managing the forests, fish, and wildlife, and for overseeing the development of mineral resources in New Brunswick. The department's Forest Operations and Development Branch is responsible for the oversight of Crown land forest operations and associated timber products.

What you will do: As a member of the Timber Products team and reporting to the section manager, the key responsibilities include the following:

• Assessment of Crown License 3 and 5 harvest operations for compliance with Crown Timber Utilization Standards;
• Assisting Regional Inspector with the oversight of scaling of Crown timber including completing check scales of licensed scalers and participating in primary forest product studies;
• Conducting roadside transportation certificate inspections;
• Assisting with quarterly and annual licensee scale and wood tracking audit;
• Providing technical advice pertaining to Crown harvest permits;
• Performing other related duties, as assigned.

Essential Qualifications:

• A diploma from a recognized two-year forest resource technical program;
• A minimum of six (6) years of post-diploma experience in natural resource-related operations;
• A minimum of one (1) year of work experience using GPS devices is required.
• An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Asset Qualification(s): Possession of a New Brunswick Scaler's License, or in the process of working toward a New Brunswick Scaler's License, to be completed within 1 year of employment. Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

Technical Competencies: The successful candidate will possess the following technical competencies:

• Specialized subject matter expertise and knowledge, including knowledge of scaling and measurement of wood products;
• Knowledge of auditing procedures;
• Knowledge of applicable legislation and departmental policies and procedures;
• Ability to use office technology, software and applications, including Microsoft Office, NB Sample and ArcGIS software;
• Planning and organizing skills.

Operational Requirement(s):

• Working a 40-hour week;
• Travelling within the province, including overnight stays, as required;
• Working alone with minimal supervision, in accordance with the department's Working Alone Policy;
• Following all established safety protocols;
• Carrying out physically demanding tasks, working outside in inclement weather and on all types of terrain;
• Possession of a valid class 5 driver licence as issued by the Province of New Brunswick, or equivalent;
• Successful completion of a Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) vulnerable sector reference check as requested.

Salary: Forest Ranger IV - $58,240 to $72,774 annually

Work environment:

• Office location: Department of Natural Resources, 80 Pleasant Street, Miramichi, New Brunswick.
• Work hours: Monday to Friday / 8:00 to 5:00; 40 hours per week.
