Job Summary
Reporting to the Centre for Translational Genomics (CTG) laboratory leadership, the Laboratory Scientist II will support CTG testing through genetic variant interpretation and classification, as well as contributions to non-clinical testing, research, and related projects. Duties include, but are not limited to:

Processing and analyzing next-generation sequencing (NGS) datasets using commercially available tertiary software to identify genetic variants
Ascertaining variant-specific data and preliminarily interpreting and classifying genetic variants according to internal classification criteria
Drafting clinical reports for review
Contributing to the execution and management of various projects
Participating in the testing of non-clinical samples for external research and industry clients
Keeping abreast of techniques, methodologies, and current treads in the genetic and genomic testing and NGS fields
Assisting in the development, optimization, and validation of new complex genetic and genomic tests, procedures, software, equipment and instrumentation
Writing standard operating procedures and other essential documentation for new procedures and workflow processes, and providing input into policy and procedure development
Participating in quality control and quality assurance activities
Contributing to research projects
Working collaboratively with other laboratory staff and various internal and external stakeholders

Job Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Molecular Biology, Biomedical Science, Human Genetics, Bioinformatics, or a related field is required.
Minimum of two years of experience within the last five years in an academic or workplace setting working with NGS data and workflows, including variant analysis, is required.
Strong knowledge of NGS technologies and techniques.
Strong knowledge of bioinformatic analysis principles and processes.
Strong knowledge of the guidelines, tools, and processes for the identification, interpretation, classification, and reporting of genetic variants.
Strong knowledge of Genetic and genomic theory, principles, and techniques.
Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated strong research, analytical and critical thinking skills.
Demonstrated ability to foster positive working relationships and collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
Demonstrated ability to work autonomously with a high degree of independence.
Demonstrated strong project management skills and the ability to effectively manage multiple projects and priorities at once.
A satisfactory record of work performance is required.
