Job Information and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Chairperson, Mathematics and Computing Science and the supervision of the Computing Science Coordinator, the Technician/Programmer will:

• Creates customized computing environments for the effective teaching of Computer Science courses in which students themselves develop software and websites.
• Takes necessary steps to ensure departmental computer security is not compromised, and minimizes the chances that a student could upload a script which could compromise or damage existing data.
• Designs/maintains a directory structure and creates multiple submission directories that can be securely accessed, such that each student requires a password to view and edit their submitted work.
• Implements a password structure for students and markers.
• Writes/maintains scripts to automatically modify read/write permissions to follow a predefined schedule so that students can always view their work but only edit it within certain timeframes.
• Learns the necessary platforms and languages to be able to support a complex course.
• Develops and maintains software infrastructure, shell scripts and web scripts.
• Develops, designs, implements, and maintains systems for events such as locally hosted programming competitions and conferences.
• Customizes an operating system for conferences.
• Sets up a secure contest administration system.
• Oversees the smooth operations of all competition systems.
• Assists faculty and students with safe and proper use of all systems, including best practices, web programming, and LINUX usage.
• Coordinates with ITSS for network security management.
• Analyses current technical situation in order to upgrade, replace, and extend the Department's computing systems.
• Sets up, logs, and monitors all systems, and gathers information on upcoming research and class requirements.
• Plans, designs, prices, and procures modifications within the current budget, and system configuration and administration.
• Upgrades and replaces existing department servers regularly.
• Constructs new virtual machines for faculty members and recommends the most appropriate individual hardware and software components, as requested.
• Installs and maintains operating systems.
• Designs and architects special projects within budget; prices and procures the specialized equipment.
• Sets up, installs and integrates the newly acquired equipment within the existing departmental computing resources.

Experience and Education Requirements

To be the successful Technician/Programmer you will have:

• An undergraduate degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering plus two to three years related experience or a combination of university and/or technical courses equivalent to two years post-high school plus 5 years related experience.
• Current technical knowledge essential.
• Demonstrated ability to quickly learn new software and/or computing environments.
