Job Summary

The Senior Communications Officer (SCO) plays a critical leadership role within the Provincial Medical Communications Centre (PMCC), reporting directly to the Shift Operations Manager. As the on-shift supervisory lead for the communications floor, the SCO is responsible for maintaining the operational integrity, efficiency, and clinical standards of the center throughout their assigned shift.

The SCO provides real-time support, leadership, and oversight to front-line communication officers, ensuring the effective flow of information, coordination of medical transports, and timely response to 911 and interfacility calls. This role is key to supporting team performance, including resolving operational issues in a confidential and professional manner and providing constructive feedback and coaching in a respectful and supportive manner. They will ensure that every communication process contributes to the safe and optimal delivery of care to patients across the province.

Job Qualifications

• Successful completion of an Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) certificate with the International Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatchers (IAED) is required.
• Current and ongoing active registration and certification with the International Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatchers (IAED) is required.
• Completion of Health Care Provider (HCP) - CPR is required.
• Completion of a recognized/approved Medical Terminology course is required.
• Minimum of one year experience within the last three years, working as a fully trained Medical Communications Officer within the PMCC, including experience working as a mentor/leader within the department, is required.
• Must be fully trained and experienced in all key roles within the center, including maintaining a strong history of high call compliance as a call taker, and being trained in both ground and flight dispatching.
• Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to mentor, guide teams, oversee operations, and support performance in a fast-paced EMS environment is required.
• Familiarity with ground and air ambulance operations, as well as the associated operational policies, procedures, and protocols relevant to provincial paramedicine and medical transport, and the PMCC is expected.
• A satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is required.
• A satisfactory certificate of conduct from the RCMP or local police authority;
