JOB DESCRIPTION

The Tissue Bank Specialist (TB-01) performs: screening of medical records for evaluation of donor suitability for the surgical retrieval of ocular, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular and skin tissue from cadaveric donors. Duties include screening, evaluation, consent, procurement, preservation, processing and storage of donor tissue. Other duties include the distribution and tracking of human tissue allografts for transplantation and performing procedures required for engineering of all human tissue allografts.

The Certified Tissue Bank Specialist (TB-02) performs the duties of a TB-01, assumes additional responsibilities as outlined below and may also be required to provide clinical and technical guidance, expertise, training and orientation to other tissue bank staff.

QUALIFICATIONS

TB01:

• Bachelor's degree in Science or a health care discipline from a recognized university OR Successful
  completion of a recognized two (2) year program in a health care discipline, which includes anatomy and
  physiology courses
• Two (2) years of related experience.

TB02:

• Certified Tissue Bank Specialist (CTBS), in good standing with AATB (American Association of Tissue
  Banks)
• Minimum of three (3) years' related experience

TB01/TB02:

• Demonstrate peri-operative aseptic and surgical scrub techniques.
• Valid driver's license and willingness to travel within NB
• Ability to attend work on a regular basis.
• Ability to perform the duties of the position.
• Good work record.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Responsible for compliance with Health Canada Regulations, CSA Standards, AATB Standards for Tissue Banking and EBAA Medical Standards (TB01 assists the TB02)
• Supports front line caregivers by obtaining consent and discussing tissue donation with families/next-of-kin (both TB01/02)
• Liaises with local and other provincial multi-disciplinary health care facilities/professionals to assist in determining donor eligibility of each potential donor. Consults with coroners, pathologists and family physicians in the coordination and retrieval of tissues (both TB01/02)
• Responsible to complete medical chart reviews, medical/social/behavioral screening (Donor Risk Assessment Interview), and physical examination to determine each potential donor's eligibility for tissue donation. Responsible for the interpretation of the above documentation. Responsible to organize recovery supplies and equipment, arrange transportation if required, and book operating room. (TB01 assists the TB02)
• Leads the processing of tissue and bone in accordance with NBOTP-Tissue Division standard operating procedures. Ensure documentation, data entry, storage and appropriate quality control measures are adhered. (TB01 assists the TB02)
• Monitors for potential adverse outcomes/reactions that could affect patient safety and require reporting to Health Canada and AATB. (TB02)
• Ensures appropriate documentation and data entry. (both TB01/02)
• Participates in quality assurance activities and quality control measures. (both TB01/02)
