Genesis Venture Manager, CDL Atlantic

Genesis, in partnership with Creative Destruction Lab (CDL), is seeking a Venture Manager for a one-year maternity leave replacement position. Based at Genesis in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, this role will support and report to the CDL-Atlantic team (operated out of Dalhousie University). Founded at the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management, CDL provides startups with access to a powerful network of accomplished entrepreneurs and investors through a recurring nine-month, milestone-based mentoring program focused on developing scalable, science-based startups.

The Genesis Venture Manager will be the CDL representative on the ground in Newfoundland and Labrador. During the execution of the job duties, there will be a focus on deepening the relationships with all stakeholders in the province to increase the outcomes of the CDL program to benefit the province.

What You'll Do

The Venture Manager will be responsible for supporting CDL-Atlantic operations; including venture recruiting for both the Prime (tech agnostic) and Oceans streams, providing business development support to CDL-Atlantic Ventures, and leading initiatives to support the growth and continuous improvement of the program.

Venture Recruiting

  • Ensure high quality Ventures for the program;
  • Responsible for researching and developing an applicant pool for the program, requiring the building of strong relationships across many externally facing organizations.
  • As the sole team member based in Newfoundland and Labrador, the incumbent will be expected to expand and deepen connections in the local ecosystem to drive increased applications from the province.

Venture Management

  • Provide business development support to approximately 10 CDL-Atlantic ventures.
  • Includes working with Ventures on the development of documentation that communicates their business effectively to the mentors in advance of each session;
  • Following up on progress on the set objectives and coaching them on feedback received.
  • Guide Ventures through the program, ensuring they receive the maximum benefit of the education and training offered.

CDL Operations Support

  • Contribute to the execution of programming initiatives both at the CDL-Atlantic site and Global Network level.
  • As the team's Newfoundland and Labrador representative, the incumbent will be expected to expand and deepen CDL stakeholder relationships in the province.

Who You Are

  • Undergraduate degree in Business or related field (or equivalent combination of training and experience) is required.
  • Experience in STEM/technology related fields preferred.
  • Strong analytical skills and understanding of business models and drivers of success in start-ups across several verticals.
  • Work experience with startups, technology companies, or venture capital is an asset.
  • Ability to analyze and systematically evaluate ventures, including proficiency with financial modeling, conducting market analysis, and strategic planning, is an asset.
