We are currently looking for a Senior Safety Specialist to join our Health, Safety & Environment team in a permanent position.
Reporting to the Manager, Health & Safety, you will work with Nova Scotia Power Management and employees to lead the implementation of safety plans and programs while supporting overall corporate commitment to attaining safety excellence that exceeds regulatory requirements.
Key elements of this role include:
Supervising, coaching, mentoring and supporting assigned Field Safety Specialists.
- Work towards an integrated approach to safety through continuous improvement of systems and processes.
- Stay up to date with changes to provincial and federal safety regulations and communicate these changes to relevant stakeholders within the organization.
- Prepare and provide regular reports on safety audits and investigation findings to management and other relevant parties.
- Assist Managers, Supervisors and Frontline Employees understand and apply interpretations of safety regulations, policies & rules.
- Work closely with management and IBEW in developing Safe Work Practices.
- Measure the compliance of operating area with the requirements of the Safety Program through auditing.
- Provide coaching and counselling on safety-related issues to all levels of the business.
- Ensure the Health and Safety Programs meets or exceeds regulatory requirements.
- Track safety performance, identify trends and support the development of action plans designed to enhance health and safety.
- Provide safety-related education such as Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee training.
- Attend management team meetings to ensure a consistent message is delivered.
- Assist JOHSC Investigation teams in determining immediate and root factors associated with an incident.
- Facilitate meetings concerning safety initiatives and work with other utilities and industries to improve safety in the workplace.
You will be responsible for personal safety and that of co-workers by observing all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations.
These skills will make you successful:
- Possess a CRSP / CRST designation.
- Supervisory experience is desirable.
- This position calls for exemplary relationship skills.
- You must possess excellent communication and motivational skills.
- You will build and maintain excellent working relationships with teams within Nova Scotia Power and its operating areas.
- The successful applicant has demonstrated their effectiveness as a team leader and easily crosses organizational boundaries to work effectively as part of an integrated team.
- You are confident in your ability to make the right decision.
- You must possess a current, valid driver's license and be willing to travel within and outside the province as required. The applicant should be willing to relocate if needed.
- Applications are preferred from those with experience in communication, transmission and distribution, combined with related education.
