Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure proper chemical treatment of all water systems in the generating station in order to maintain a continuous supply of make-up, cooling and potable water.
  • Analyze feedwater, boiler water and condensate for the purpose of maintaining proper chemical residuals, corrosion control and the exclusion of undesirable contaminants.
  • Conduct tests and analyses sample taken inside and outside the station for environmental control purposes.
  • Examine fluids and lubricants for contaminants and compliance with specification.
  • Supervise Chemical technologists to ensure that sampling schedules and chemical residuals are maintained according to proper procedures.
  • Maintain and update knowledge of applicable Technical Codes, Corporate Policies and Procedures, Work Protection Code, Safety and Health Program, Environmental Legislation, ISO 14001, EMS and the Corporate Safety Manual.
  • Maintain analytical records and submit monthly reports to Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment.
  • Regenerate all demineralizer systems including primary trains, mixed beds and condensate polishers.
  • Administer the apprenticeship program for Chemical Technicians.
  • Conduct analyses of fuel oils to ensure compliance with specifications as required.
  • Cooperate with all departments of the station to ensure that chemical and related monitoring systems function properly mechanically and electrically, and all instrumentation is functioning properly.
  • Follow Corporate policies and procedures, comply with the Work Protection Code and the Corporation's Safety and Health Program.
  • Assist the Safety, Health and Environment Manager in the purchase of new chemical equipment and subsequent training of Laboratory personnel.
  • Support in development of the maintenance program and five-year budget plan.
  • Assist the Safety, Health and Environment Manager with preparation and monitoring of Capital and Operating Budgets.
  • Conduct training for personnel to operate the Wastewater Treatment Plant within Environmental Guidelines and maintain all training and development programs for the chemical staff.
  • Review all water quality data for consistency and initiate corrective action when water quality deviations are found and monitor the effectiveness of these actions.
  • Participate in Plant equipment inspections to detect evidence of deficiencies in water quality.
  • Manage the process flow of the Controlled Waster Landfill and the Wastewater Treatment Plant to ensure physical and regulatory constraints are not exceeded.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

You are responsible for your personal safety and that of co-workers by observing and promoting the company's Safety and Health Program and are responsible for any environmental aspects of the job and performing work in an environmentally responsible manner.

What We're Looking For:

  • Expertise in water treatment and chemical analysis;
  • Leadership and team support skills;
  • Strong knowledge of safety and regulatory standards;
  • Analytical and problem-solving abilities.

What You'll Need:

You have a three (3) year diploma in chemical or environmental technology or equivalent combined with a minimum of five (5) years related experience in water and chemical control and analysis with a thorough knowledge of high-pressure boilers. You have power plant chemistry or wastewater treatment plant chemistry with laboratory experience, and at least 1-year supervisory experience. A sound knowledge of environmental control techniques and methodologies would be a considerable asset. Other combinations of qualifications and related experience may be considered.
