As part of the Health and Safety team, the Safety Specialist role is responsible to assume a support role in the design of policies, programs, and procedures, to ensure that all employees and contractors are working in the safest manner and under the safest conditions possible. The Safety Specialist is highly trained in incident response; providing expert analytical services in carrying out thorough investigations, determining root causes, and culminating in recommendations designed to minimize the likelihood of any future reoccurrence. Work includes developing and implementing Health and Safety programs, policies and procedures and conducting annual Health and Safety Program Audits while fostering positive relationships and influencing stakeholders to facilitate change.
Key functions include:
- Conduct regular and ad hoc site surveillance audits of both NB Power and Contractor programs and performance to assess compliance with occupational health and safety legislation, company standards, and project-specific requirements. Identify hazards, document findings, and implement corrective actions in collaboration with site leadership to reduce risk and improve safety performance.
- Review and evaluate contractor safety submissions for the Mactaquac Life Achievement Project, including safety programs, hazard assessments, and safe work procedures, to ensure alignment with NB Power standards and regulatory requirements. Provide feedback and approvals while working closely with project and procurement teams to maintain consistent safety expectations.
- Monitor and support NB Power employee compliance with corporate safety policies, procedures, and training requirements. Deliver guidance, coaching, and corrective actions as needed to promote a strong safety culture and ensure adherence to legislative and organizational expectations.
Our ideal teammate will have:
- Bachelor's degree or a two-year diploma or safety certificate from an accredited organization
- Canadian Registered Safety Professional certification (or eligible to attain within 12 months of hire)
- Six years of related Health & Safety experience in the heavy civil or industrial construction field is required
An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered. Subject to competition response, the minimum qualifications may be modified.
An Eligibility List generated from this competition may be used to fill future vacancies at the same level within a period of up to 12 months.
