The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Co-op, Internal Audit student for the Fall 2026 term (September 7 – December 18) within our Internal Audit team. This 16-week opportunity offers hands-on experience in a professional internal audit environment, working closely with audit professionals across the Emera group of companies.

In this role, you'll gain valuable experience working alongside current and prospective CPAs (Chartered Professional Accountants), CIAs (Certified Internal Auditors), and CISAs (Certified Information System Auditors), making this an excellent opportunity to explore a career in audit.

What you'll do:

You will gain exposure to key audit processes in risk assessment, compliance, and internal controls. This includes:

  • Support audit engagements and SOX compliance activities, including planning, executing, and documenting internal audits
  • Assist with walkthroughs, testing of controls, and evidence collection
  • Analyze business processes and controls to identify risks, inefficiencies, or gaps
  • Contribute to the development of clear and practical audit recommendations
  • Participate in internal team initiatives and quarterly reporting responsibilities

Work term outcomes:

By the end of your work term, you will have:

  • Gained exposure to multiple Emera operating companies and how each conducts its business
  • Developed skills in risk assessment, data analysis, communication, and stakeholder engagement
  • Built familiarity with SOX compliance and risk-based internal auditing practices
  • Assessed control design, performed operational effectiveness testing, and supported audit fieldwork
  • Worked alongside CPAs, CIAs, and CISAs, gaining insight into the profession and potential qualifying hours toward a future CPA designation

Who you are:

You're a motivated and detail-oriented student in your 3rd or 4th year of an undergraduate degree in Commerce, Business Administration, or Accounting, looking to develop your professional skills in a collaborative environment.

You bring:

  • Interest in pursuing a career in internal audit or an accounting/audit designation
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks across teams and deadlines
  • High attention to detail and a problem-solving mindset
