With over 140 non-bargaining staff and lawyers operating out of 18 offices, Legal Aid NL is one of the largest providers of legal services in the province. Our vision is to ensure all people, regardless of means, capacity or social situation, have access to the knowledge and services they require to protect their basic legal rights.

We are searching for a strategic and results-driven Director of Finance (permanent) to join the senior management team in the head office based out of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. Reporting to the Provincial Director, the position will be primarily responsible for oversight of financial statement and budget preparation, ensuring compliance with financial legislative framework, payroll administration, and providing financial analysis and advice to the Commission's executive and board. Key job specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Strategic Leadership

  • Provide strategic financial advice to the Executive Team and Board to support decision-making
  • Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and collaboration

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Oversee preparation of financial statements in accordance with applicable accounting standards
  • Direct the development and monitoring of annual operating and capital budgets
  • Coordinate the annual audit process in partnership with the Office of the Auditor General
  • Prepare and oversee federal and provincial financial reporting and funding claims

Operations Oversight

  • Oversee all accounting functions, including accounts payable, receivable, and general ledger
  • Ensure efficient and compliant payroll administration across the organization
  • Manage employee benefits programs, including pension, health, and dental plans
  • Lead procurement and asset management programs, including oversight of office space leasing

Risk, Compliance & Governance

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant financial legislation, policies, and regulatory requirements
  • Strengthen internal controls and financial policies on an ongoing basis
  • Lead the organization's fraud risk management and investment frameworks

Screening Criteria:

  • Professional accounting designation (CPA or equivalent)
  • Bachelor's degree in Commerce, Business, or related field
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of progressive experience in finance/accounting roles
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing payroll and employee benefits administration
  • Experience with Government of NL financial policies and practices will be an asset

  • Well-developed communication, report writing, and presentation skills
  • Strong financial, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines
  • Thorough knowledge of finance regulations and laws

The successful candidate will be required to provide a Certificate of Conduct with Vulnerable Sector Check prior to commencing employment.

Employees of Legal Aid NL are covered under the Provincial Government Pension Plan and Health Plan. An optional Dental Plan and Disability Plan are also available. The salary ranges from $91,765 to $119,294 annually and is based on the HAY Management Pay scale (Hay Level 27)
