In addition to leading and guiding course architecture, outcomes alignment, AI supported content development workflows, and online course production, this role provides mentorship and coaching to strengthen internal capability, develop documentation and best practices, and support continuous improvement across UFred's online learning portfolio. The consultant helps ensure academic quality, learner centred design, accessibility, and consistency across all online courses.
1. Course architecture and curriculum design
- Lead structured design conversations with SMEs to define the course description, syllabus, course learning outcomes, CLO-to-PLO mapping, weekly topics and subtopics, assessment plan, and assessment-to-CLO mapping.
- Translate program expectations, academic standards, and level requirements into coherent course frameworks and learning pathways.
- Provide expert guidance on sequencing, scope, workload, learning progression, and academic integrity considerations in course design.
- Develop, refine, and maintain reusable templates, checklists, and design standards for course-framework approval.
2. AI-enabled content development and academic quality assurance
- Use approved AI tools and prompt patterns to accelerate the generation of draft learning content, examples, activities, case studies, feedback, and assessment items.
- Work closely with SMEs to verify content accuracy, currency, breadth, depth, and appropriateness for the intended academic level.
- Transform draft content into engaging learning materials that are clear, instructionally effective, and learner centered.
- Apply institutional expectations for responsible AI use, copyright, privacy, bias mitigation, and academic quality control.
3. Online course production and learner experience design
- Configure and build approved content using institutional templates, standards, and supported digital course authoring platforms.
- Apply evidence-informed online learning practices, accessibility requirements, and Universal Design for Learning principles in the presentation of content, activities, interactions, and assessments.
- Create or coordinate multimedia elements, interactions, knowledge checks, and course assets that improve engagement without compromising academic rigor.
- Mentor on production workflows, design considerations and quality standards.
- Prepare complete course packages and assets for LMS implementation and launch readiness.
4. Quality assurance, consultation, and continuous improvement
- Conduct design and build quality reviews before release, using defined rubrics, mapping checks, and accessibility checks.
- Facilitate feedback loops with SMEs and internal stakeholders during development and after launch to identify refinements and future revisions.
- Maintain clear records of design decisions, mappings, prompts, review comments, and version history.
- Contribute to institutional standards, workflows, and professional learning related to online course design and development.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Instructional Design, Learning Design, Educational Technology, Curriculum Studies, or a related field.
- At least four years of recent experience designing and developing online courses in a post-secondary environment or a closely comparable adult-learning setting.

- Demonstrated experience with course and program outcomes alignment, including CLO-to-PLO or equivalent mapping and assessment alignment.
- Advanced, hands-on experience with at least one enterprise LMS.
- Strong knowledge of adult learning, online pedagogy, assessment design, accessibility, and universal design for learning.
- Strong writing, editing, facilitation, and project-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple course developments at once.
- Proactive and open attitude towards the use of AI tools responsibly in content development, review, and quality assurance workflows.
- Experience in peer-to-peer coaching, mentoring, and/or leading colleagues through learning and/or instructional design best practices
