We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated and detail-oriented Structural Engineer in Training (EIT) to join our Ports & Marine team in Halifax or Sydney, NS, or St. John's, NL!

In this role, you will support the planning, design, and delivery of marine infrastructure projects while developing your technical skills under the guidance of senior engineers. You will contribute to the evaluation and design of marine structures such as wharves, breakwaters, caissons, and sheet pile walls, applying applicable design codes and engineering standards throughout all project phases.

Working with a multidisciplinary team, you will assist with feasibility studies and condition assessments, and support project execution through design reviews, technical reporting, and construction/contract administration. By helping ensure the structural integrity, safety, and performance of marine assets, you will gain exposure to meaningful projects and build a strong foundation toward professional licensure as a Structural Marine Engineer.

Your key responsibilities:

  • Support senior engineers in coordinating with clients and multidisciplinary teams to define scope, priorities, and practical design solutions;
  • Assist with the planning and design of marine infrastructure—wharves, breakwaters, caissons, and steel sheet pile walls—from concept through detailed design;
  • Contribute to structural analyses and models, including component design (decks, piles, fenders, bollards, etc.) and, where applicable, mooring/berthing studies;
  • Prepare and organize engineering deliverables, including drawings, specifications, calculations, and technical reports, with support from senior team members;
  • Support feasibility studies, options analyses, and structural/economic evaluations to inform project decisions;
  • Assist in selecting and recommending materials and construction approaches suited to marine environments and long-term durability;
  • Support construction delivery through shop drawing reviews, site visits/inspections, and responsive design updates under supervision;
  • Assist with assessments of existing waterfront assets and contribute to condition assessment and rehabilitation recommendations; and
  • Contribute to a high-performing team by participating in QA/QC processes, documenting design decisions, and supporting project coordination and delivery.

Your capabilities & credentials:

  • Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (master's an asset) and registration/eligibility as an Engineer in Training (EIT) with a provincial Engineering Association;
  • 0–4 years of relevant experience (co-op/internship/summer student experience in marine or structural engineering is preferred);
  • Familiarity with relevant codes/standards (e.g., CSA S6, A23.3, S16, O86) and interest in marine guidance such as PIANC;
  • Exposure to marine structures and materials (e.g., timber/steel piles, timber cribs, caissons, sheet pile walls), with a desire to learn and take on increasing responsibility over time;
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently, maintain attention to detail, and thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment;
  • A collaborative mindset and enthusiasm for contributing to a positive, supportive team culture; and
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to travel to project sites within Atlantic Canada as required.

What we can offer you:

  • A competitive compensation package effective on your first day of employment:
    • Comprehensive health and dental benefits
    • CAAT Defined Benefit Pension Plan with employer contributions
    • Generous vacation allowance commensurate with experience
  • Maternity or Parental leave top-up
  • Health spending account
  • Wellness incentive
  • Membership dues reimbursement
  • Education and lifelong learning subsidization
  • Community volunteering incentive
  • Employee Family Assistance Program
  • Public transit subsidy

In addition to the above benefits, we offer:

  • Flexible hours and locations to support work/life balance;
  • Ability to work paid overtime and bank time-in-lieu for future use;
  • Diverse team with a wide range of experience and expertise;
  • Exposure to a variety of projects;
  • Support to develop skills and pursue projects related to your own interests;
  • Collaboration between multiple disciplines and levels of expertise;
