Job Summary:
The Community Primary Care Paramedic performs independent medical care and intervention for patients at pre-hospital scene settings. This includes responding to emergencies and routine calls; conducting physical examinations; performing assessments and tests; initiating a variety of interventions; and performing other related duties as required. Work is performed with considerable independence and is reviewed through observation, examination of records and reports and the presence or absence of valid complaints. Primary Community Care Paramedics report directly to the Operations Manager.
The Primary Care Paramedic in the community role also performs community/palliative care and participates in other care initiatives as required. The duties and responsibilities of this position will include, but are not limited to, collaboration with other health care teams in the community setting including physician, pharmacy and nursing groups; education of patients, families, and health care professionals on the scope of the Community Paramedicine Program; and collection of patient and key stakeholder feedback to support evolvement of the program. The Community Primary Care Paramedic will be expected to complete additional training/education pertaining to the expanded services provided by Community Paramedicine including, but not limited to, insertion and assessment of urinary catheters, completing mini Comprehensive Geriatric Assessments (CGA), fall risk assessments, frailty assessments, obtaining a Proactive Best Possible Medication History (PBPMH), and administering a selected group of IV antibiotics.

? Regularly moves, lifts, or carries patients or equipment ranging from 10 to 50 pounds and occasionally more than 100 lbs. in challenging environments and which is not always conducive to proper ergonomics. Position is rated heavy to very heavy.
? Constantly bending, stretching, kneeling or pushing/pulling of stretchers (which require up to 35 lbs. of push/pull force or greater per employee as the terrain and weather conditions; sometimes in small and cramped spaces.
? The Community Paramedic may be reassigned/required to fill the role as a field paramedic on an ambulance as deemed necessary.
? Visual concentration or alertness is required and there are frequent time pressures in the pre-hospital emergency setting.
? Willingness to complete additional training/education in community/palliative care as required.
? Lack of control over work pace occurs due to unpredictable situations and/or call volume.
Qualifications:
? Graduation from an approved Primary Care Paramedic program accredited by the Canadian Medical Association;
? Current registration with the NL Paramedicine Regulation as a PCP;
? Possession of a valid Class 4 Driver's License as issued by the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador;
? Medical authorization with the Office of the Provincial Medical Director (OPMD) is required and must be obtained upon successful completion of program orientation;
? Minimum of five years of Primary Care Paramedic experience is required;
? Experience in community paramedicine/palliative care is preferred;
? Completion of Palliative Care training Pallium LEAP Paramedic course is required upon hire;
? Current certification in Basic Life Support;
? Effective oral and written communication skills;
? Critical and sound decision making skills;
? Ability to travel when required;
? Successful completion of the Physical Capability testing certificate (within the last 3 months) and continued responsibility to meet the minimum standards of physical capability as outlined in provincial policy;
? For standby, must be able to report to work within the required timeframe of 10 minutes or be willing to stay at the base.
? A satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is required for this position;
? A satisfactory Driver?s Abstract from Motor Vehicle Registration is required;
? A satisfactory certificate of conduct from the RCMP or local police authority;
