Reporting to the Technical Services Director, the Mechanical Engineer, will be a key part of the Build NS Strategic Infrastructure Team. This position provides guidance and strategy in the development of mechanical building systems infrastructure projects with an emphasis on major healthcare building projects of varying delivery methods.

The Mechanical Engineer focuses on design of efficient and cost-effective systems that maximize comfort, enhance asset longevity and adaptability, and ensure optimal return on investment. This includes integration of specialized systems and Infection Control measures, crucial to maintain a safe and supportive healthcare environment.

Responsibilities
  • Review drawings and contract documents to ensure conformance with requirements, codes and standards.
  • Evaluate and quantify the impact of changes on project outcomes.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations effectively to the Project Delivery Team.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance healthcare project delivery and facility operations by recommending improved methods and system changes.
  • Act as a mechanical engineer subject matter expert for projects with a focus on healthcare.
  • Read and understand plans and specifications. Visualize two-dimensional drawings in three dimensions.
  • Provide mechanical engineering support to cross functional Project Teams as needed.
  • Support the Project Delivery Team through the planning, design, and construction of large and complex projects, with a focus on Healthcare, delivered through various methods including Public-Private Partnerships (P3s), Design Bid Build (DBB), Construction Management (CM) or Design Build (DB) by assisting in establishment, design, and delivery of mechanical design requirements in a healthcare setting.
Qualifications
  • Extensive experience in mechanical engineering design and management on major healthcare projects with strong knowledge of building and healthcare industry standards and requirements.
  • Accredited Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.
  • Must be a Professional Engineer with a minimum of 8 years experience as a P.Eng in the building design and construction industry. Licensed in the Province of Nova Scotia, or the ability to be licensed. If the latter, the applicant must provide in their submission a letter from the Engineers Nova Scotia stating eligibility.
  • Must have demonstrated experience with healthcare-related design and construction (a minimum of 4 years' experience, and/or three projects) and experience with CSA healthcare mechanical standards, and all current and pending national building codes and standards.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills, proven ability to identify and implement improvements in project delivery and operations.
  • Completion of a Canadian certified Infection Controls training (CSA or equivalent)
  • Experience working collaboratively on a cross functional team throughout a project's life.
  • Experience in producing construction drawings and details and demonstration of the ability to review and red-line construction documents, both from the viewpoint of the mechanical discipline, constructability, and overall project coordination with other disciplines.
  • Experience or willingness to learn E-Builder project management integration software, and construction software (Procore, Project Sight etc.) as required.
  • Experience or willingness to learn Microsoft 365, PowerPoint, MS Teams, and Bluebeam.
  • Continuing Educations courses, seminars or workshops in healthcare issues and trends is considered an asset.
  • Provincial policy is that all new construction attains LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver accreditation. A fundamental knowledge of LEED or having LEED accreditation status is beneficial.
  • Experience which demonstrates ability to multi-task and manage several project portfolios at the same time with the same level of attention.
  • As work pertains to construction, must have basic knowledge of safety procedures in the construction environment.

Pay Grade: NSL-14

Salary Range: $3448.90 - $4742.24 Bi-Weekly

Salary Placement: The placement of a new hire into the salary range is based on an objective salary rating process. This process will assess the knowledge, skills and overall qualifications of a candidate along with internal equity to determine appropriate compensation placement. Each pay grade has established steps, and new hires cannot exceed certain maximums which are outlined in the Compensation Framework. The final compensation for this position will be determined based on these factors.
