Position description
Under the direction of the Manager of Building Maintenance and Heating Plant Operations, the incumbent will perform the following duties:
- Maintain and service high and low Pressure steam distribution systems, condensate return systems, steam traps and compressed air systems. Duties include the maintenance and service of mechanical systems by:
- Assist in the removal and prefabrication of piping;
- Repair steam traps, control valves, valves and strainers;
- Energize and de-energize steam mains as required for service purposes;
- Perform regular boiler maintenance which includes routine maintenance, minor repairs and maintenance on associated boiler equipment.
- Maintain a daily equipment log sheet and mandatory department of labour log book.
- Report major equipment problems to the Manager of Technical Services.
- Respond promptly to emergencies when on call.
- Perform maintenance on piping and valves and boiler cleaning during heating plant maintenance refits; other shut down duties as required.
- Clean and flush domestic hot water tanks and heat exchangers during maintenance refits
- Conduct routine inspections on heating plant/campus mechanical systems and components including steam traps, pumps, filters, etc.
- Respond promptly to emergency call-ins outside of normal working hours as requested by the Manager or the Power Engineer on shift
- Select, maintain and operate industrial and commercial equipment common to the trade.
- Perform tasks and duties in confined spaces and/or from ladders, staging, lifts and other high elevation work stations.
- Perform duties using products, methods and materials common to the trade.
- Respond to call-ins for emergency shift replacement when required.
- Perform other related duties as directed or assigned.
Qualifications/skills
The following qualifications are required for this position:
- A valid New Brunswick Drivers License
- A valid New Brunswick Class Three Power Engineers Certificate preferred.
- Candidates holding a valid New Brunswick Class Four Power Engineers ticket will be required to successfully obtain a New Brunswick Class Three Power Engineers Certificate within 12 months of their date of joining will also be considered.
- Sufficient experience to operate safely in the following areas is essential (Duties not limited to these areas): Maintenance of high and low pressure steam systems and pneumatic control equipment
- Experience in the following areas is desirable, but not essential: Working within a scheduled Preventive Maintenance (PM) program Familiarity with DDC controls

- Physical conditioning and ability required to perform the assignments outlined under "Nature of Work" and to use CSA approved safety equipment
- Ability to consistently perform manual tasks safely and efficiently
- Willingness to perform all specific tasks of this position and to be able to recognize and deal effectively with trade-related problems.
- Willingness and ability to be available consistently throughout the term of this position
- Should be well-organized and be able to establish priorities and plan completion of duties related to this position
- An attitude that demonstrates a willingness to work as expected and the intention and ability to work cooperatively and effectively with supervisors, faculty, students, co-workers and other staff
- Ability to be at work and to work consistently for the hours assigned without direct supervision
