In this role, you will:

  • Coordinate and deliver community mapping (mapathon) events with volunteers and partner organizations by delivering standard training on mapping for beginner/intermediate users and facilitating events
  • Work with clients, colleagues and staff to implement program activities, including hosting mapathon events, setting up new mapping projects, and preparing and delivering training on mapping using open-source platforms, such as OpenStreetMap and MapSwipe
  • Build and maintain relationships with external partners, volunteers, and stakeholders to promote collaboration and community engagement.
  • Participate in international partner meetings as a focal point and provide progress updates and reports on community mapping activities
  • Collect and record program statistics on participation in mapathon events
  • Prepare annual progress reports and communications
  • Prepare regular program reports and assist with data collection for assessments and program evaluations.
  • Support the development and implementation of training for staff and volunteers
  • Assist in resource management, including tracking budgets and reporting requirements
  • Identify areas for process improvement within the program and service delivery framework and recommend changes.
  • Contribute to the development of new program/service strategies and solutions to improve service delivery.

Mapathon Event Facilitation

  • Facilitate Mapathon mapping events for external audiences and Red Cross audiences virtually and occasionally in-person
  • Demonstrate and train participants on how to map using OpenStreetMap or MapSwipe
  • Deliver standard training sessions for volunteers and members of partner organizations to facilitate and lead their own Mapathon events using provided training materials
  • Adapt training and event materials as needed for different events
  • Answer questions and respond to any inquiries from participants during events
  • Liaise with and answer questions from trainers before Mapathons, as relevant
  • Encourage feedback and testimonials from participants to gauge satisfaction with the event

Map Stewardship and Data Validation

  • Review and validate OpenStreetMap data created by other users at a Mapathon through the HOT Tasking Manager, applying OpenStreetMap tagging and digitizing rules
  • Provide constructive and positive feedback through comments to new event participants
  • Support the planning and delivery of training for partners and volunteers so they can further map different communities

Support Data Analysis and GIS/Map Products

  • Support different data and map products and requests based on standard procedures and requirements, including data processing/cleaning, data analysis, and basic/intermediate map creation/updates
  • Analyze and process data using multiple internal/external data sources for maps, dashboards, reports
  • Find and analyze reports, assessments, reference data sources/statistics to help inform domestic and international humanitarian response to disasters

What we are looking for :

  • Qualifications include a minimum of 3 years' experience and a 1-2 year post-secondary certification/diploma in Geography, Geographic Information Science, or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 1 year or more of experience in GIS, mapping and/or data analysis using geospatial data
  • Knowledge of OpenStreetMap, Overpass API, and HOT Tasking Manager a strong asset and/or strong computer literacy with the willingness to learn
  • Knowledge of geospatial tools (ArcGIS Pro and/or QGIS) a strong asset and/or strong computer literacy with the willingness to learn
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) and SharePoint is required
  • Strong presentation and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience working within a team
  • Excellent analytical skills and a strong understanding of data collection and management
  • Strong attention to detail, and ability to identify gaps and take the initiative to address them
  • Self-motivated to complete training and strong organizational skills
  • Fluency in English is required, French is an asset
  • Ability to manage program schedules and timelines; prioritize tasks, track progress, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to identify and resolve issues, by applying standard procedures and functional or organizational knowledge.
  • Communication skills, diplomacy and empathy to interpret information and deliver advice, clarify client or stakeholder needs, offer solutions, and resolve escalations in new or somewhat sensitive situations.
  • Ability to adapt to changes in the business environment or client requirements.

Working conditions :

  • The work is performed in a virtual environment with potential for occasional travel to meetings and conferences
  • Ability to adapt to changes in work priorities and respond to time sensitive needs.
  • Work will be conducted in an office-like setting.
  • Work requires interactions with dissatisfied clients and the resolution of client issues.
