JOB PURPOSE

Meet individual needs of patients in accordance with the philosophy, objectives and policies of Nursing Standards and Horizon Health Network. To foster an environment of patient/family centered collaborative care, providing support and education as required. Plans, organizes, coordinates, directs and participates in carrying out of all programs and clinics under the Urology Ambulatory Clinic/Urodynamics and Cystoscopy/Lithotripsy/Rehabilitation and Inpatient domain as directed by the Urologists for the hospitals and other institutions in Area 3.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate of an approved School of Nursing or Bachelor of Nursing.
  • Current registration with the Nurses Association of New Brunswick, NANB
  • Minimum of 5 years recent med/surg nursing experience
  • Nurse Continence Advisor experience or Certificate
  • Current BLS for Healthcare Providers
  • Training in biofeedback, urodynamics, Botulinum Toxin counselling and preparation, Intracavernosal Injection training (ICI),suprapubic catheter changes and care, best practices in UTI management in patients with and without LMN disease, perioperative prostatectomy teaching.
  • Demonstrated assessment skills and ability to function independently with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to respond to emergency situations, rapidly changing priorities, and complex patient care situations
  • Demonstrated teaching, communication, interpersonal and team building skills.
  • High regard for confidentiality and advocacy for patients.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Patient Care

  • Plans, organizes, and directs the activities at the Urology Ambulatory Clinic; Urodynamics and Cystoscopy; Lithotripsy for the Area 3 population.
  • Time will be shared and distributed between the provincial Stan Cassidy Centre for Rehabilitation (SCCR), Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital (DECRH), and Oromocto Public Hospital (OPH). This would be in an inpatient and outpatient capacity.
  • With other members of the health care team, collaboratively assess patient care needs and plan for the delivery of care to meet those needs.
  • Assess patients for falls risk
  • Assist the physician with minor procedures and provide support and comfort needs of the patient during such procedures
  • Performs and records results of:
  • Biofeedback
  • Electrical stimulation
  • Detailed patient history
  • Teaching (i.e. Lifestyle changes, Kegel exercises, bladder retraining, ICI teaching, self catheterization teaching in patients with and without LMN disease)
  • Nocturnal Enuretic Program (i.e. charts, alarms, bladder retraining, diet changes, etc.)
  • Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation – TENS
  • Continence Clinic
  • Pre and Post Radical Prostatectomy Clinic
  • Pelvic and Rectal Examination
  • Residual urine
  • SPT changes for inpatients
  • UTI counseling in patients with and without LMN disease.
  • NCA will work in partnership with the Urologists and independently perform urodynamics
  • Teaches intermittent catheterization to patients at Urologist's / Gynecologist's / Physiatrist's request
  • Follow-up of patients with neurogenic bladders and patients with incontinence
  • Provides Lower Motor Neuron (LMN), Bladder education, and when to treat.
  • Changing and troubleshooting suprapubic and urethral catheters (inpatient and outpatient)
  • Teaching pre- and post-operative continence courses for patients, including prostate cancer patients.
  • Specialize in self-catheter teaching and management.
  • Guidance and management for complicated UTIs, including prevention and appropriate treatment (adherence to choosing wisely guidelines- educate patients and clinicians on when to treat)
  • Respond to patient calls about catheter care and incontinence and provide independent counselling to patients with incontinence
  • Access to timely urodynamics studies
  • Training in insertion of difficult catheter insertion
  • Guidance and management for complicated UTI's including appropriate treatment
  • Support patients with non-catheterized bladder management, including continence.
  • Records all appropriate information on patient hospital charts

Education/Mentoring

  • Offer support nurses on inpatient units and in Emergency Departments
  • Willingness to provides structured Inservice program and education for hospital staff and Health Care Team members.
  • Provides public education forums / workshops where applicable
  • CIC education and training
  • LMN bladder education and training for patients as well as health care staff
  • Willingness to work with pediatric patient (in-patients and out-patient basis), including pediatric continence teachings
  • To continue potential education and courses on continence as required.
  • Performs similar and related duties as delegated
  • Provide assistance and nursing support to the Ambulatory clinic
  • Participate in the orientation and support of new staff members
  • Participation and mentoring of students
  • Recognize unsafe practices and intervene to prevent injury to patients and staff.
  • Maintain data necessary for reports and quality assurance activity
  • E-learnings current and up to date
