Heavy Equipment Operator
17 Week Position
May 4th - August 26th
The Town of Torbay is seeking the services of one (1) Heavy Equipment Operator to work in its Infrastructure and Public Works Department during the summer months to provide vacation relief. The duration of employment will be seventeen (17) weeks only commencing on May 4th, 2026, and ending on August 26th, 2026.
Classification Function
The primary function of this classification is to provide municipal services to the Town's residents by operating and maintaining equipment essential to the delivery of the services. A secondary function is to maintain the Town's infrastructure, roads, buildings, vehicles, facilities, and/or other property.
Primary Responsibilities
- The performance of light maintenance work on the Town's equipment.
- Performing a variety of tasks associated with the maintenance and repairs of the Town's roads.
- All other duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Infrastructure and Public Works, Director of Infrastructure and Public Works or the Chief Administrative Officer.
Required Qualifications
The Heavy Equipment Operator:
- Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must hold a valid Equipment Operator's License with air brake and traction engine endorsements for the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador and should have prior practical experience as a Heavy Equipment Operator and other related experience in underground infrastructure and general maintenance work.
- A minimum of 3 years' experience as a heavy equipment operator.
- Must have formal certification through an operator's training course would be an asset and the individual must possess a Class 3 driver's license with class 5, 8, and 9 / 9 A endorsements.
- Must hold valid certificates in Powerline Hazzard, Traffic Control, Trenching & Excavating and WHMIS.
- Must provide a recent driver's abstract issued by the MV Registrar of NL.
- Must have the ability to be insured (and maintain continuity) under the Town's insurance policy.
- Must be able to provide an RNC Criminal Record Screening & Vulnerable Sector Check certificate.
Physical Requirements
While performing the essential functions of this position, there is frequent need to sit for extended period of time in vehicles or other equipment, stand, walk, talk, hear, distinguish between shades of color, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and lift and/or move 30 pounds.
While performing the essential functions of this position in the field, there is potential for exposure to disagreeable environmental factors, such as outside weather conditions, dampness/humidity, vehicular traffic, toxic/caustic substances, fumes, odors, and unrestrained animals.
Tasks involve the intermittent performance of extremely physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavy objects (50-100 pounds).
Reporting Protocol - Operational
This position will report to the HEO Lead Hand for any day-to-day operational matters related to outside roadwork or heavy equipment maintenance or repair concerns during the 17-week period of employment.
Reporting Protocol - Supervisory / Management
This position will report to the Supervisor of Infrastructure & Public Works for any day-to-day direction required and to discuss any matters of importance associated with your employment. In the absence of the supervisor, please report any concerns to the Director of Infrastructure & Public Works.
Rate of Pay
As per the collective agreement.
